Re: AV Podcast: Home Cinema July 2007

So, listened to this on my PC rather than my ipod- it was bloody annoying, please please fix the iTunes thing!

While I appreciate that real hard core AV people care about ISF and stuff. But I think it may have been better had Phil asked some more hard hitting questions about the price of Sky.

Why is the box still £300, when this the 2nd generation box due. He even asked if they planned to raise the £10 sub. Phil- ask them if they think they should cancel it!

I do think people get an easy time on these podcasts. Fine the Podcast team are not Paxman, but you could try to give them a bit of a hard time.

That said the stuff with Mark from Onkyo was great!

How can that guy say that hd-dvd is going to win?! Maby because the company he works for has a line of players coming out in a few months! Come on, hd-dvd is slowly dieing.. Every day we see blu-ray doing one better - ie. shop decides to sell bluray only, studio X goes blu etc..

Re: AV Podcast: Home Cinema July 2007

I'd like to query a point made by one of the team on this podcast. There was a comment along the lines of "people hear the HD formats and think that the sound is quieter, when it's actaully a bigger dynamic range". My apologies, these aren't the precise words, but i think it's the gist.

Does this mean or imply that the volume levels will vary during a film ? I was watching "Walk The Line" yesterday on DVD, using the DTS soundtrack and had to continually adjust the volume down when the live stuff came on, as it was way louder than the normal dialogue.

I accept that this is probably more realistic - a Johny Cash gig is bound to be very loud compared with normal talking, but that doesn't mean (in my mind) that such a change in volume is appropriate for home cinema.

Apologies if i added 2 and 2 and made 3.5, here, but perhaps someone can expand on the podcast comment, even if unrelated to my observation.

Cheers

MB

PS - good to have the podcast back.

It was Neil that made the comment and refers to the HD formats, i.e Dolby TrueHD and Uncompressed PCM. They appear to be quieter when you switch over from normal DD/DTS etc, however this is not because they are quieter in volume, but they actually have full dynamic range so the soundtrack will sound more natural and reach those loud to very quiet and back again passages with full dynamic punch. HTH
