This podcast shows up in the MP3 RSS feed as the previous home cinema edition namely number 60. Had to come here to get the right one (No. 62)

Re: AV Podcast : Home Cinema : 17th Mar 2007

I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast. I really associated with some of the comments from you guys who got into AV and home cinema in the early 90's.

My interest grew from a friend who was into AV and although I couldn't afford my own equipment until a couple of years later, the focus on stereo vs mono and then the use of a centre channel in Dolby Pro-Logic was really involving. I remember seeing the benefits of a widescreen TV. My first Dolby Digital experience at home was Die Hard With A Vengance on Laser Disc. I loved the music that only came from the rear speakers.

I completely understand Phil's thoughts on things being different for newcomers. I feel grateful for going through some of the early learning process in AV and putting up with some of the inadequacies. The knowledge has become invaluable as so many new AV enthusiasts/beginners don't understand the basics of sound and vison equipment and that's why we have so many questions on this forum.

Thanks again guys and I look forward to your discussion on audio calibration and configuration. I hope you'll mention Dolby Digital EX vs Pro-Logic IIx vs DTS NEO6.

Phil, Bill Hutchison had a shop in Glasgow. Purchased my Tannoy 611s from there.

Re: AV Podcast : Home Cinema : 17th Mar 2007

How did I get into Home Cinema?

1990, purchased a Toshiba 28" Nicam Stereo TV and a Toshiba Nicam Stereo Hifi VCR, which I hooked to my stereo amplifier. Around 4 years later, purchased a Sony Surround sound system (Dolby Prologic) in a box from Comet with 5 speakers (sounds familiar!). A few years later DD amps were all the rage and yes I remember all those Sherwoods that Richer Sounds were "persuading" customers to buy! Spotted a Kenwood 888 going for 300 quid and purchased that.

Then came DVD, and the famous Samsung 807 from Woolies for around £250. WOW, Dolby Digital rocked. Discovered Tannoy and started to upgrade my speakers too.

Then along came DTS, so purchased a Sony 930 AV Amp and a new DVD player. DTS rocks even more!

Another big purchase was a REL Q100E thanks to GDFraser who then worked at StereoStereo in Glasgow.

Then along came plasma and I purchased a Pioneer 434 which bit the dust and is now a 436 XDE, complete with image retention! Moved to Pioneer equipment, so now have a 1014 amp, 575 DVD player, 220 DVD recorder.

XBOX 360 and XBOX 360 HDD player and then finally a Sony HiDef camcorder.

Oh I've also had the TV-Drive from Telewest for around 1 year now too.

So, I'm pretty much in the same boat as all of you guys at the round table, as in been there from stereo, through DPL and onto DD/DTS/DD-EX/DTS-ES.
