Re: AV Podcast : Home Cinema : 8th Mar 2007

I would be interested from a producer point of view on what people think about the content in this roundtable discussion. Is this the type of discussion we should have on a weekly basis, would having forum members send in their thoughts and problems make it an interesting listen? Please leave us some feedback on this one.

I haven't had a chance to listen to this particular podcast yet Phil but I have always thought that this is the way they should go at least to some extent to include members thoughts and problems.

Re: AV Podcast : Home Cinema : 8th Mar 2007

Only listened to the roundtable this week. Very good. Enjoyed it. There was some misinformation on the crt projection front (and I can see the boys in that sub forum are already sharpening their knives) but the rest of it was great. Thought Neil did an excellent job explaining about the rechnolgies, snakes et al. Good work.

Another great podcast! I also found Neil's contribution to be invaluable. I think he posesses that rare gift of not only having the requisite knowledge but also the ability to disseminate it in a clear and concise manner. Would be great to see him on future roundtables.

The piece about calibration using DVDs with test patterns was interesting. There was a reference to an AV Forums member who has created a DVD to download but I didn't catch the name. Could we have a link please?

Always good to hear more (door - rhymes with soor!) Scotsmen in the podcasts!

I thought it was excellent. Informative. It's a better approach to cover a number of topics around a single thread and Phil does a great job at hosting it.

Excellent description of how to set-up a display, how about a similar one on how to set-up the audio.

Thumbs up Re: AV Podcast : Home Cinema : 8th Mar 2007

Yes, I have to agree with the quality and spread of information about visual displays and calibration this week. I have a DLP projector and an old CRT TV but your discussion gave me a lot to consider when I decide to upgrade to a flat panel display. In addition, I could do with re-calibrating my projector so will try to hunt down that free calibration DVD recommended by you guys.

It's just been mentioned but audio calibration should definitely be covered. The basics of speaker arrangement are one thing, subwoofer setup is another. You may want to consider that Dolby Labs covered this topic in their first podcast.

If I had my own request for an audio discussion it would have to be around the use and preference of Dolby Digital vs DTS and more importantly the 5.1 and 7.1 matrix surround modes. For example, with a 7.1 sound set up, would you use Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Pro-Logic II, Dolby Pro-Logic IIx or DTS NEO-6 on a source that was originally just Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital EX or DTS. It would be good to hear you thoughts and I'd be happy to share my own with you.

Thanks again.

Re: AV Podcast : Home Cinema : 8th Mar 2007

Hi Phil,

Just to add my thanks for this particular podcast. I've listened to the calibration section 3 times gleaning what I can and making reference notes for future use. Ditto all comments re. Neil's input. Very useful indeed for work and home.

I certainly would appreciate more of the same technical talk covering other topics.

Matt
