The "Bluray fanboys" are making a huge deal of the number of titles. The movies that are being released, in my opinion, are not killer "apps" that the format needs.
The Matrix and Harry Potter movies will most likely appear on HD-DVD first, because that's Warners M.O. at the moment.
I've got 3 Blu-Ray titles on order currently, I've just received 1 Blu-Ray title and 1 HD-DVD title today. I've got my eye on a few HD-DVD titles. IF Star Wars was announced in the next few days, even though I hate the movies, that would give Blu-Ray a huge advantage over HD-DVD as those are among the most sought after movies. The simple fact is - THEY HAVEN'T. There is still no killer app on either format in my opinion. The movies you've mentioned aren't. Heck, someone was excited about Alien Vs Predator coming out on Blu-Ray. That movie is an absolute abortion of all things cinematic!
So, at the moment, the only major releases out on the formats (In my opinion) are Batman Begins (not my fav Bat-Movie) and Harry Potter. The Matrix is arguably the biggest title announced on the HD formats. If they'd announced Toy Story or Monsters Inc. over Cars, that would have been a huge announcement. But they didn't - they seem to be holding back, but I have no idea why.
Don't forget there's also the issues over codecs, with MPEG2 still being generally scorned still.
Sony are not doing themselves any favours whatsoever. If they want to make Blu-Ray more popular, then convince them to release the right movies.
For fear of going around in circles - the day that Star Wars, Lord of the Rings or something of that magnitude is announced, the format war will have a huge shift. I don't care WHICH one wins, but they need to stop using pea-shooters and bring out some heavy hitters to shift this current situation.
(I've no idea why you mention Matt Damon BTW)
