14th September 2012

This month the team discuss the Metal Gear announcement, Sony Liverpool's closure, Blood on the carpet at OnLIVE and what the team have been reviewing. They also consider games of yesterday they’d like to see remastered.

To enter the competition simply suggest a topic you'd like us to discuss on a future podcast below. The team will pick the best and announce the winner on the next podcast.

Hi guys, is there problem with the RSS feed for the games podcast? I can get the movie and home cinema podcasts via by squeezebox podcast player by copying the RSS feed link, but the games one doesn't work.

How about a discussion on the future of digital downloads, NSMB2 releasing at full retail price, WiiU limited internal memory for downloads and the future with PS4 and the next Xbox.

Loved the recent episode but would love to see a 2 hour show due to the monthly release.

Also you completely dodged the question when asked about what percentage of gamers pirate if it wasn't as high as Ubisoft's 90% claim or whatever it was.

I was also equally as shocked about OnLive's potential demise. Whilst I don't buy into cloud games it is still a method used to game and an addition to the industry. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said it maybe marketed towards the wrong people. But I do think Netflix integration and uses in hotels and long journey flights would be very good.

For the competition:

1) I know this is subjective. But do collector's editions offer good value for money and have any of you bought one or when was the last time you purchased one and what was it?

Should collector's editions have a genuine production run (or do they even have one as a matter of fact) so that they remain a rarity to appeal to hardcore gaming fans?

I think GAME group had exclusive rights to the Loot Chest edition of Borderlands 2 which sold out, but I've seen these fetch as much as £250 on ebay.

OR

2) Are voice overs in games important? In the Splinter Cell thread When Ironside was confirmed as not doing the voice over for Sam Fisher it caused some disappointment.

I would add a plus 1 for a discussion on digital downloads, and maybe including mobile gaming (Android, IOS and social games vs traditional consoles). Does AVF take mobile gaming seriously enough?

As a big FPS fan, would be interested in your thoughts on the best FPS shooters and the multiplayer experience. Obviously there is a big debate between mw3 and bf3, but some folks seem to be reverting to older versions of COD for a 'better' multiplayer experience.

Maybe something on the shape high street retail market - I know you are not all fans of game/station, but we need something on the high street. What did you make of the latest on game's sort of relaunch GAME and Gamestation brands merging into single edifice | GamesIndustry International - will it be enough to save them? Personally I have been using HMV a lot more for trade ins and new purchases - they have a good tech section - or are they both relics (perhaps a new proper console (i.e not the wiiu) will save them?) I guess some of this links back to the point on digital downloads.

I browse Video Games on the high street. Alot less then I used to but I do still go in. I don't think I have any intention of ever buying though so perhaps its just force of habit. If I am honest I would be absolutely fine if Games, Movies and music became only available online.

Thanks for another great podcast gents. I did get a giggle at the very brief mention of how to pronounce the title of a game - I'll never mention Day-Z again 8)

I'd love a discussion about the next gen consoles and what the AV forums staff expect from them. I've read and heard a lot of rumours about the next Xbox being more of an entertainment hub with a focus on services rather than being an upgraded gaming platform with a few additional services as it is today. Conversely, there are the zany rumours of a 16 core, dual GPU mega system that's also floating around various forums.. Which will Durango most likely be and what will it cost (as in what will the marketplace accept as reasonable or value for money)?

Over at Sony, questions are piling up too. Is their latest handheld platform another dismal failure despite the cutting edge tech? Do Sony have the money to create another powerhouse gaming machine? Will it ship around the same time as Durango or will Sony be last to the market again?

Over at Nintendo the Wii U continues to divide opinion. I think it's a great console and it offers users the ability to attach any hard drive they wish to upgrade the storage from SSD to USB connected drives. Wii U is the 5th cheapest console to be released in the UK (when all other systems are converted to todays money) based on a recent GameBurst podcast. Will the WiiU be another hit for Nintendo or a flop given the tech is seen to be only slightly better than the 360 and PS3?

I like the idea of a longer show too! I'd love to hear dedicated segments on the different platforms (e.g. PC, console, hand-held, mobile etc) and flesh out discussions a little longer.

As for games to be remastered, I'd love PGR 2 to be given a HD remake as it was the best game in the PGR series and brilliant fun in mutiplayer.

Cheers!

I'd be up for doing a longer podcast. We can sometimes chat for 20mins before we record and 20mins after! Ultimately the decision lies with Editorial.

podcast length is fine imo. Unless there are a massive number of "new" topics to discuss.

Finally got a chance to hear the podcast on a PC as I can't get the RSS feed to work via my squeezebox for some reason. This was probably the best gaming podcast yet. Thanks for the review of the Fall of Cybertron game. I am a massive transformers fan, but am a bit disillusioned by the recent "Bayformers" and was glad to see a proper G1 game. I have picked up a copy of war for cybertron so I can play that first and will get fall of Cybertron later in the year. As far as suggestions for future podcasts discusson in next gen consoles has already been mentioned but would be very interesting especially any tech specs (even rumours at this stage). I would also like to hear a discussion on your top five most innovative games i.e truly groundbreaking games of any era which have moved gaming on e.g mario, portal, even COD4. That would be an interesting discussion and should generate some debate.

Thanks AJ. What specifically did you find that stood out about this last pod? I'm always keen to hear feedback whether negative or, in this case positive Ste had a rock solid connection for once which both Leon and Myself felt had made a big difference to our conversational flow/banter. Shame Mark was recording from Ice Station Zebra!

One month we will record under perfect conditions!

I think it was the fact you covered quite a lot of topics such as ubisoft DRM, the onlive and sony liverpool problems, real word issues with broadband, remastering of games etc. as well as some good reviews of games. The podcast seemed to be more about the general gaming world and where it is going which I enjoy, rather than just on specific games. I think you guys are getting a lot more relaxed in the presentation as well, the review of tour de france on the last podcast was comedy gold.

Great! Thanks for taking the time to reply. Thats all really good to hear. We have a good rapport now considering we have never actually met face to face. Leon and I have played online on and off for years now but the rest of the reviews team only know each other through their work on the site and podcast.

Cheers for the feedback mate, really appreciate it and im glad you're enjoying tuning in to us each month. It's something that I really look forward to each month as it's great to catch up with these guys and put something out there for you to enjoy as well.

I think i'll record on the better connection in future as it definitely seemed to help at my end as well. I'll try and stick some more interesting/humourous opinions on the games mentioned in future. Nothing like giving a game a good kicking every now and again

I can't recall but do you discuss what chart releases or DLC are due the month the podcast made?

In the October podcast you may point out the games to watch out for. Example: Dishnoured, Medal of Honour, Resi 6 etc.

Game release dates • October • 2012 • Eurogamer.net
