I have no idea what dithering is, it would be nice for an explanation in plain English

In the context of plasmas, it's straightforward.

Each RGB pixel is either on or off - there are no inbetween levels.

The 256 shades of red/green/blue are generated by rapidly turning the pixel on or off, more on-time corresponding to brighter shades, more off-time darker.

The 600Hz sub-field drive of the V10 series means that the on/off pulsing happens (hopefully) too fast to perceive.

Hi hodg100!

Overscan is not available in THX mode so i presume people arent watching some SD channels in THX then?

Most SD channels are fine but some do have the flickering in the top/bottom few mm.

Cinema mode is excellent to this isnt an issue but i would prefer the lazy option to keep it in THX for everything apart from gaming!

Sorry, I didn't realise you were watching in THX mode

I guess you can just pick and choose on a per channel basis which mode you use. It's a bit of a shame you don't, at least, have the option though.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, why don't you use THX for gaming?

You won't see it on blu ray, DVD or broadcast HD. It's the 'noise' on the outside of broadcast SD that you wouldn't previously have seen

At least that might make Emmerdale interesting for a change

Ooh, I dunno, for a farming community they don't half have a lot of lovely looking women. No offence to farmers intended

Anybody got a recommendation for the best Gamin settings for the 360? IS THX or Gaming the preferred option?

Cheers

Have your guys turned down/up the contrast, brightness and Sharpness in Thx and cinema mode?. Or are you leaving it set to default setting for the first 200 hours?.

Nope. This shouldn't be a problem and as I've heard/read, these plasmas are already "driven-in" at the factory so they shouldn't need to drive-in by the consumer/end-user.

I've asked this before and I got the reply that it isn't necessary and hasn't been a problem atleast on the one-year-earlier generation of Panasonic plasmas either..

I have a PS3 but have been too busy to try out much gaming since i got the TV! I've only played FIFA once (and was too drunk to do anything other than admire how big the tv was!)

I guess 'Game' mode is just prevent people with LCDs thinking you cant play games on a Plasma

I'm looking forward to a good long session on my Panny once i return from my hols!

Has anyone spent much time tweaking all the contrast / brightness and other settings to get the perfect picture yet? I don't have a grayscale dvd where do you get these from?

"flickering like mad"

It is your eyes. Mine does not flicker. You clearly have eyes that can detect flickering at 600hz. It seems like technology has some way to go for you!

re: Panasonic TH-P42V10 and TH-P50V10 Owners Thread - Part 1

Hey All...

Preemie NEWBIE here... My first Post & I'm proud to open up & announce I'm going at 4:00 (Paris time) to get my 42V10 and Holy Smokes am I STOKED!!! (USA ~ NY lingo for REALLY REALLY Excited!!!)

Now I have LOADS of questions I'll warmly welcome answers/recommendations on.

First off my existing equipment which is about 8 years old, though I believe pretty hi-end when I purchased all of it.

It's all JVC... TV (32" CRT) is NOW OUT (Oh Yeah baby... Come On Funny Feelin'!!! so no need to mention what it WAS) the V10 will be here in 2 hours!!
DVD player is an XV-E100SL (has no HDMI port!!! ) meaning I will probably have to get a new unit.... more on this in a minute, see what you guys have to say...?
Home Cinema is: RX-E100R... called "Home Cinema Control Center" also has no HDMI ports. I'll refer to as "SS" Surround Sound
Sky Sat. OLD/Normal...Panny TU-DSB31 (I have no idea about firmware updates or anything about this unit... I just know I get english TV here in Paris & for that I'm happy) No Sky + or HD YET!!! (working on it... but from "here" it's looking costly!) Just a Sky signal with whatever package I ordered 8 +/- years ago... good enough for now to give me a digi signal. I WILL BE Upgrading though!!!

OK my new found friends... I'm a notal "noob" (USA / NY lingo for knows nothing) when it comes to all this new technology in home cinema. I REALLY NEED HELP from all yopu smart Guys & Gals!!!

I'd be willing to link PDF scans of the users manual that show what the backs (connection ports) of all the equipment I have, has, so I can get advise on how to hook everything up to my new V10. I want to buy all the cables I'll need or "am advised to get from you fine folks" when over there picking up my TV (It's ready anytime after 5:00 (your time) today. I want to get it all hooked up & dialed in & watch a few of my favorite DVD's tonight... ALL NIGHT!!!!

Though I am a research "Mad Man" when it comes to purchasing big ticket items (hence the reason I got the V-10... do it right the first time) I'm looking for advise on hooking this thing up to achieve the best QUALITY picture I can from the existing equipment I have. (my biggest issue now with easily changing out the DVD player to an 1080 upscaler is I NEED region free on the replacemnent & I need to read reviews & research which one i want or look at the reccomendations from you guys) for now I'm OK withg maiking the best connections I can (Optical cords??)

I just can't absorb all there is to comprehend in this new era of home cinema. So I ask... You fine folks!! Please hook me up!!

I've read here (been snooping around for about a week or so...) that SCART connections are... well.... lets just say "not too highly regarded here" even if one utilizes "Gold" type of cables, but I have no choice "BUT" to use a scart to connect my Sky box to the (either) Surround Sound processor or directly to the TV. I'd like to go through the processor so I have Surround Sound & I know using scarts (as I do now) is the easiest but is it THE BEST??? I think not... not to feed the monster TV I am.

you know what... screw it, I attached copies of the connections pages from the users manuals of the 3 pieces of equip I want up & running tonight.

Anyone willing to look at what I attached & advise the best way to hook everything up (for the best possible sound & picture) with either Scarts, Digital co-axial cords, Optical Digital cords AND tell me "HOW TO" from where to what????

Shoot!!! I can upload all at once.. files are too big! I'll have to attach the SS processor file separatly as well as the Sky box connections file. The most important one of the missing files for me to get help & for you folks to see what I have is the processor one. I'll include in any replies I may receive...

OK ANXIOUSLY AWAITING ANY Responses from willing participants!!!!

THANKS!!!

re: Panasonic TH-P42V10 and TH-P50V10 Owners Thread - Part 1

PS HUGE APOLOGY if I posted (the above) in the wrong forum... Figured the V10 owner thread would be a solid place to start...

Again my apologies to the MB police if I violated the rules of engagement!!

I got a V10 yesterday, and it's an excellent panel. Large areas of solid gray, like in setup menus, do flicker slightly. Driving it from a PC at 1080p over DVI the effect is also sometimes evident.

Can't say it bothers me, but it's there. Although the plasma cells may be switching at 600 Hz, the switching sequences for some gray levels must of necessity have lower frequency components; it is also possible that depending on how you perceive these rapid switching sequences, you may notice some variation in - for want of a better word - "integrated illumination" over time, which would amount to flickering.

But anyways... yes, in large areas of solid gray, for example, I can notice it, and I am reasonably certain that my set is not faulty, but that this is something common to all plasmas.

If it bothers you, change it for an LCD.

Welcome to the Forum

No offence friend, but you need new kit to get the most out of your new tv. If you have money to spend give us a budget to work with. If you are sans cash at the moment at least buy a cheapie upscaling DVD player, connect to tv with an HDMI cable (do not buy an expensive one!) and to your SS with either optical or co-ax (little if any difference in sound quality).

Until you get Sky + or Sky + HD, stick to SCART with your digi box. If you want surround sound out of Sky then optical or co-ax (if available) - but don't forget to turn the tv sound down so as not to interfere with your external speakers.

Exactly how i notice it. As for swapping it for an LCD, i dont think i could. Not sure how i would stand with the shop on getting my money back. Besides, the picture is that good i doubt i would want LCD again. I presume i will get used to the flickering anyway.
