Re: Panasonic 37/42 PX80 Series Owners thread - Part 2

Woo hoo - my 42" arrived this morning at 7AM. Fair play to the delivery lads - apparently they left Leeds at 1.30AM and after me (just outside Glasgow) they were heading for Dunoon and Cambeltown

Im really pleased with it. My old TV was a 28" Sony KV-28DX30U CRT which had an excellent picture and I was concerned this might not measure up. I needn't have worried - the picture quality is superb and I have only been able to try SD sources so far.

What surprised me most was how well DivX files played on it. I have a Freecom MP-350 WLAN Mediaplayer which has a 500GB HDD and it can stream from my PC too. I had ripped my DVD collection to it, plus I use it for watching dowloaded TV shows. It is connected by DVI-HDMI and I set it to output at 1080p (I will play about with this) and the DivX DVD rips of Planet Earth and Star Wars were awesome, as was the latest downloaded BSG episode. Sky HD is on order an I can't wait to see how good that looks if this is how well it does SD.

For those of you concerned about the size of the 42" over the 37", I hope these pictures help out. Personally, I'm really glad I went for the 42" - I think the 37" would have been too small. Even my wife hasn't made a big deal about it and she was certain it was going to look too big. Our room is 16'8" x 13'3.

I have since moved the TV round a bit so it sits more like the first image.

Cheers Will. I don't have the option to select '1024 * 720' and I can't get the picture to work through HDMI for some reason - going to keep researching but any further suggestions would be appreciated.

By the way, the Xbox looks awesome on this TV...

EDIT: I managed to add the above resolution as a customer resolution buy the picture was way out of alignment so sticking with my current settings. Has anyone managed to hook a PC up to this TV with a DVI to HDMI cable?

Im stuck on what to do with the tv buzzing. I know if I take it back to currys they will say its normal. However I can show them the fact that the buzz gets louder and quiter if you press the back which obviously indiacates there is a fault somewhere.

But what if the replacement is worse? what if it has dead pixels?

I miss the old CRT days where the only thing you were worried about was how far back will it stick out!

ok I have my PC set up with my plasma. I am using a dvi to hdmi cable and have my graphics card set at 1280 x 720. I had to go into the ati cards settings and play with them a little but overall im quite happy with the results and definately think it looks better then when I had it plugged in through the VGA.

sorry man, my bad - 1024 x 720 isn't a recognised graphics card resolution. The closest you can select 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 720. I think I must have been typing the answer with my 42" in mind.

What HDMI input are you using? I have my media player on a DVI-HDMI in HDMI1 and it works just fine.

Even CRT t.v's had their faults. The first 21 inch t.v we bought when we got married 20 years ago only had one speaker working so had to be swapped. That was a sanyo. Then when we wanted something bigger (a Sony 25 inch t.v) the first one we collected had two dark dots on it just like dead pixels. That got swapped as well.

How very true. I have just bought the 37PX80 to replace a 5 year old Panasonic CRT. When i first got the CRT the back cabinet vibrated like mad - a couple of Comet engineers came out and tightened a few screws and pronounced it perfect! in the end I took the back cover off and stuck some sound deadening pads on the inside, which cured the problem for life. Thankfully, I have not experienced any buzzing or vibrations from the new one.
