The key to this is the black level that they deliver as it makes images literally 'pop' from the screen, almost 3D like.
As for gaming ,myself and many are seriously impressed with the results.
Just use the ORBITER for prolonged gaming (3 hours+) to prevent Image Retention.
.. and it's probably essential to break every hour or so for 5 minutes and switch to other sources. I don't think the orbiter is necessarily going to protect from a cumulative build up of IR over long sessions.
If gaming is the primary use of the set it's very important to take these breaks and I would also say to run the washer pattern after every session.

Hi manhar.
Most people here sit 8/9 feet away from a 60"
15 feet is far too much.

Re: Pioneer 9G Owners Thread

Sorry another question....

To the owners who had their 5090 calibrated....

Is it done on the Day and Night setting?

How much has it improved from Bumtious' initial setting posted on this forum?

Thanks

Are you still able to make adjustments to basic things like colour, brightness, etc?
I only ask as i find some films are different in terms of colour saturation and black level and require slight tweaking.
Not being able to do this would 'do my head in' as it would mean that i'm forced to watch the film/HD broadcast to not my preference.
I like to make the odd adjustment here or there, that's why they're there

Hi NICKMHD.
The ISF Day/Night settings are locked, you can't access or view them either.
So no adjustments to colour/brightness,Purecinema etc.
All the best.

Hi kingfats.
Thanks kingfats,i thought this was the case.
Why would i pay £300 if it means that i'll have to put up with a over/under saturated image?
CRAZY
No film or HD broadcast is the same.I often find when watching HD football that sometimes the colour is over/under saturated from one match to another.
I would be forced to use the presets (movie, etc) which would mean that i've flushed £300 down the toilet
P.S England playing in the Stanford 20/20 Cricket on Sky Sports HD1.

That's the beauty of calibration though you don't "need" to fiddle with settings again as it's been ISF'd to the industry standard.
So all your sources should look great (correct) whatever you watch.
Cheers.

Yeah right, but how can fixed/locked settings give a 'correct' picture if the source varies?
It can't.
Your ability to make any adustment has been taken away from you

The source shouldn't vary though the whole industry work to the same standard........would be a total mess otherwise.
All the best mate.

Re: Pioneer 9G Owners Thread

NICKMHD,

"Locking" the ISF settings was a requirement of the ISF specification. It is a contentious point.

Most folk who frequent this forum are tweakers. They fiddle with settings to try and get the best picture quality. Broadcast material isn't always perfect so may need correction and the tweakers may improve the picture.

Their partners may not like the process of tweaking :-)

Locking the ISF day and night settings prevents tweaking. Partners who hate tweaking are able to rejoice, customers who are unsure whether they have the optimised settings sleep well knowing that they don't need to try further to improve settings and those with family that just might try to "improve the picture" are safe in the knowledge that the ISF settings can't be changed.

The other side of the coin is that someone like you who really wants to tweak the settings to compensate for broadcast deficiencies can't do so. ISF day and night probably aren't for you.

An accurate calibration of movie mode will get you D65 almost across the board. It can be improved using software controls for the ISF day and night settings but we are looking at the last 5% of calibration.

Catch 22 here. Calibrate ISF day and night, get the best D65, ensure that the client's family can't screw up the calibration or... Calibrate the movie mode, get very close to D65, leave the client able to tweak and risk the family screwing up the calibration.

It isn't an easy call in my opinion. Suggesting that £300 has been flushed down the toilet for a calibration isn't fair.

Re: Pioneer 9G Owners Thread

Right, I may aswell ask here as I am about to pull the trigger on one of these bad boys (LX6090). I saw both the 5090 and the 6090 side by side on Saturday and the 6090 just seemed to dwarf the 5090 (which was my original choice). It wasn't even a subtle difference.. it literally made the 5090 look like a much smaller screen

I'll be coming from a Bravia 46" which is why I'm leaning toward the 60" Pioneer.. I just don't feel the 46" I currently have is big enough, and don't really want to buy the 5090 for a minor increase in real estate. We live in a converted barn and the wall that the TV is situated on is huge (high ceiling) which is why I need a larger TV... soooo, on to the question... anyone ever regretted the larger size (for those who have the 60")??

I could have a PJ setup, but a few things limit me (the PJ would have to be situated right behind the couch, the Sky feed would have to be relocated etc etc) so I'm thinking plasma.

I've got everything I THINK I'll need (settings from bumtious, prices from umpteen sites, and a sketch of the location of the wall bracket) just wanted to here from the chaps on here. I've read about 84 pages of the thread but it's just so loooooong

I think everyone on here with a 50 would prefer a 60" I even said today while watching Chelsea game that it would look sooooo much better on a 60 but........ its all about the £ so if thats not an issue for you it should be a no brainer.

Hi Piers.
Thanks for your honest and imformative reply.
Wouldn't it be better if ISF would just allow you to adjust the BASIC settings e.g colour, etc but lock the complex/intricate settings?
I know it's not allowed but couldn't they(ISF) configure the calibration so that the calibrated settings can be restored at the touch of a button if need be.
This would be the perfect solution.

Hi EVH.
You will NOT regret getting a 60" mate.
Your only problem will be convincing the missus,if you have one.
Your best bet is to order the 60" and when it arrives just tell her it's a 50"

Re: Pioneer 9G Owners Thread

Forgive the naive question, but why dont these sets come calibrated from the factory?
Also why does it cost £300?!! Doesnt take more than 15 minutes I presume?

Re: Pioneer 9G Owners Thread

Nick,

How do you suggest that this might work? The ISF 3C interface isn't just Pioneer. Across multiple manufacturers you want the ability to have a locked ISF setting for the "complicated" settings yet freedom for the end user to change other settings.

As a calibrator, the "complicated" settings are the ones that give me grief. An ISF memory perhaps without the ability to access pure cinema, colour space or drive mode worries me.

Manhar

Because they are calibrated to look good in a showroom under strip lights.

A full calibration takes about 3 hours using test equipment that costs over £5K.

Hi Piers.
I don't know how 'this might work',i'm merely asking a question.
I gather that being able to have the best of both worlds may not be possible however.
I for one would not be happy paying £300 and be stuck with settings that i cannot tweak to compensate for broadcast deficiencies.

Re: Pioneer 9G Owners Thread

Nick,

Get your movie mode ISF calibrated. You will then still be able to tweak for broadcast deficiencies.

It's the ISF day/night modes that get locked. Movie, Standard etc. still are open for fiddling around.
