Panasonic Increases VIERA Line of High Definition TVs To Include 16 Plasma TVs and 5 LCD TVs
Las Vegas, NV (January 6, 2008 - – Panasonic Corporation of North America, the principal U.S. subsidiary of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (NYSE:MC), the industry leader in high definition TV, announced today at the Consumer Electronics Show, that its entire 2008 line of high definition flat screen televisions will be branded VIERA®. I am very interested in this PZ850...let's see if they can produce a built in scaler on a par with Pio. Rest of the spec seems sound.

Re: New Panasonic 2008 models

Good stuff. '24p native reproduction' is also very welcome. Was gonna bite my tongue and go for the 50PZ70 but these sound like they're worth waiting for. Hopefully prices are as reasonable as with their previous range. As awesome as the Pioneers are meant to be, they're not worth 3 grand + in my book so this seems to be the only decent alternative.

Re: New Panasonic 2008 models

Indeed they look really nice and sleek - crosses my fingers to an all black model though!

Starting to be glad I´ve hold out till this generation, that 46" is indeed just the size I´ve been hoping for, it would be ideal for my room, as long as it´s sub 120 cm. wide?!

Looking forward to some real life pics from CES and some MSRP

Re: New Panasonic 2008 models

According to D-Nice over at the AVSForums the blacklevel of the new Panasonics is 0.009 fL. The Kuro 1080p has a blacklevel of 0.004 fL and the Kuro 768p a blacklevel of 0.004-0.008 fL.

I think that in a normal lit room you won't see much difference between the new Pana's and the Kuro.

Yes, I'm very curious too about the pricing of these new models in relation to Pioneer pricy Kuro's.

Before Kuro reviews started to come in, D-Nice claimed that 1080P models would have 0.001ft/l black level. Don't believe everything that you read on the net.

Re: New Panasonic 2008 models

good news, will keep a close eye out for either of the 58"ers and the 65" have been looking for one around that size for a while to replace my projector, wonder how much extra they will charge for the 850 over the 800, the only useable feature for me is the advanced settings menu!

Re: New Panasonic 2008 models

Interesting reading for the THX spec of the 800, which begs the question for the 850 - why ISF calibration?
Surely if the THX spec on the 800 renders the output as per the director's intention, ISF is redundant?
Equally, wonder what DCC (Digital Cinema Colour) brings to the party.
Colour purity/richness hasn't been an issue for God knows how long now - just the ability to set the RGB levels independently.
Maybe it's just noise, and doesn't do anything much at all. Just something else to make people think the new models have more things that their current one doesn't, so time to change. Typical marketing dept spin perhaps.

I think that in a normal lit room you won't see much difference between the new Pana's and the Kuro.

Yes, I'm very curious too about the pricing of these new models in relation to Pioneer pricy Kuro's.
There most certainly is a visible difference between 0.004fL and 0.009fL. (or 0.013cd/m2 vs 0.031cd/m2)

I don't know how visible it'll be in a bright room, but in a darkened room it'll be obvious. And it looks like I was that guy and posted a topic that had already been done.

Can the mods merge http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=683578 into this topic? (more pictures there)

I'd like to know what this THX spec is, and how big the tolerances are to get certified. Surely there was no need for it, and rather they should just be calibrated to ITU-R bt.709 out of the box? Though I suppose THX is a badge that consumers understand.

A bit of info from THX on their displays which doesn't seem to have the Panasonics listed yet:

Re: New Panasonic 2008 models

This all sounds superb. Question is though when will get an official idea of release schedules and prices in the UK? Will they be sold in the USA first (if so then we’ll be able to read reviews and see lots of detailed pictures).

I presume Panasonic do the same thing every year.? If so when did we last year get an idea of this data for the 2007 models?

Thanks guys.

Re: New Panasonic 2008 models

So, does this mean that there will not be a 37 inch Plasma from Panasonic this year?

I seem to recall last years announcement did not contain any reference to a 37 inch TV, but the 37PX70 still appeared. So will there be a 37PX80 this year?

Re: New Panasonic 2008 models

The intro of a 46" model will mean one thing - Panasonic can drive the cost of 50" units up to increase their margins.

Today 50" models cost around £300 more than their equivalent 42" models.

For the new range expect that premium to apply for 46" units - whereas the premium for 50" units will be probably around £600 over the equivalent 42" units.

Nice, clever and crafty Panasonic!

Those 50" bargains to be had today will simply turn into 46" bargains and you'll probably now have to pay a hefty premium for the new 50" models

ISF also takes into consideration the ambient light and colour casts from the room as well as anything introduced from the individual sources.

I read the THX spec as ensuring that a screen starts off a lot better than the current defaults but it isn't going to eliminate the need for ISF unless your room and all your sources are also THX spec

Re: New Panasonic 2008 models

You will always need calibration to be done in-situ, with your specific full video signal chain in place (HD players, STBs etc) so that small variances can be calibrated for. It is not possible to calibrate a screen and then send it out to be installed. You might set the screens internal processing to be running on the correct levels, but it will have only been based on the lighting in the room where the calibration was done and on generic test patterns. It won't take into account differences in outputs with different sources. Personally I'm not sure that THX displays give you that much more than another badge on the front and a bit more money to THX. In fact I sometimes wonder about the need for ISF badges for the same reason! As long as the tools are there to do it it will be done equally well on a screen with a badge as a screen without. Going a bit OT though I know. Back on-topic I can't wait to see what these new panels are capable of and hoping it will transfer over to the pro market too!

Re: New Panasonic 2008 models

My main question is will the new range have buzzing. Whats the point of a good picture when you got buzzing noise to put up with?.
