First a bit about me.
I don't claim to be an expert in plasma tvs, but I have worked in the electronics industry for over 20 years and through this job I have had chance to see/test/install many panels in many different locations, from Airports and Pubs to Home Cinemas and Shopping Malls.
My home system is pretty basic ATM as I got fed up with forking out £1,000s on up-to-date kit many years ago.
It comprises; LG50PC55 Plasma, Sky+, Tevion upscaling DVD player, Sony STR-DB940 Amp, Lite-On HDD-DVD Recorder, 4 x Warfdale NXT speakers, 1 x JA Audio in wall speaker & a Yamaha YST-SW320.
Now to the LG Plasma...
The TV is big (obviously), but the Piano Black surround and curved rear make it look very stylish. Having the speakers under the panel makes it not much wider than my old 42" plasma that had it's speakers on either side.
For a 50" panel the picture from SD sources is very good. After manys hours of playing with the sets settings I managed to get a picture that has great blacks (although not as deep as the Pioneer or Panasonic) high contrast, truthfull colours and realistic skin tones.
There is almost a complete abscence of haloing (solarisation) even on dark, misty, foggy or underwater scenes.
There is zero after image even when watching fast moving films or footy matches.
Depending on the quality of the source the image displayed is clear and sharp, but not too sharp that it looks edgy or digital.
Upscaled DVDs (Component in, set at 720p) look stunning.
SKY+ (RGB) looks almost as good when watching high bandwidth channels like SKY Movies or SKY Sports, but does suffer on some of the low bandwidth channels or old tv re-runs that are lower in quality than todays offerings.
Freeview is quite a mixed bag. Sometimes looking clear and sharp and others looking pixely with slight after image. All I can put this down to is the bandwidth of Freeview coupled to the quality of RF signal coming into my house which I know is pretty low.
All the inputs have there own preferences so that you can set your colour, brightness, etc. individually for each of your sources.
The speakers are loud and clear with good bass, but can at some frequecies have a tendency to make the cabinet resonate.
I'm in the process of getting SKY HD and a PS3 (when money allows) and I will add to this review regarding the sets HD perfromance when they arrive.
All in all for £1500 I am very impressed and pleased with my purchase and would not hesitate to recommend this set to someone who wants a large HD plasma that does not break the bank!
Any questions please feel free to ask...
