Considering a GT50. Other than size, are there any differences between the 42GT50 and 50GT50, in particular in picture quality?

If I don't get one of these, I'll be getting a Samsung 51E6500 plasma.

Same picture quality on both, nothing different apart from size as you said

I've been sitting on the wall reading all these posts for ages & if my sony lcd hadn't blown up I'd still be working out which set to buy.

Took a pretty big gamble buying a plasma as I will be playing pc games through it a fair amount of the time & know image retention is possible.

But it's proved perfect & the games look awesome.
Just need to give it a break every hour.

Very happy with my gt50 so far.

Same here too, i had been reading/researching for months and decided on a 42" ST50 at the last minute I had a change of heart and went for a 50" GT50 as I knew I would always be wondering should I of gone for a GT50.
Out of the box picture is excellent......been playing with the Spears & Munsil BD got THX Cinema mode tweaked and Avatar looks absolutely fantastic!

Very happy chappy here! Just waiting for my 3D glasses any day now!

Hi Guys,

First post, so be gentle

After researching and viewing lots of different models I've settled on a GT50, but I have a faily large window (~15 ft long) about 8 feet behind the TV viewing sofa. The window is south facing, do you think that the reflection from the window will spoil the viewing of the telly?

Cheers,

Josh

Just to let everyone know I completed my online redemption for 6yr warranty, 3D glasses & Avatar/Titanic BD on 28/11/2012 - today I received a PDF via email for my 6yr warranty so my Glasses & BDs should be any time now - cant wait to get stuck into 3D.

To keep me going The Dark Knight Rises dropped on the doormat this morning ....that's tonight's entertainment sorted!

On the Spears & Munsil BD it gives you a whole host of set-up & evaluation patterns, you go through each pattern making subtle changes to brightness, contrast, sharpeness etc.

What I do know is that the settings may be different for your set to achieve the desired outcome.

I have set up THX cinema mode, and to be honest its not far off the factory default settings but at least I know its as good as I am going to get.

I'm going to buy a TV tomorrow.

I'm stuck between the 42GT50 and the Samsung PS51E6500 51" plasma. I was considering the 50GT50 but it's just a bit too much for my budget.

I don't like the STs because of the grey/crystal border, so I've had to rule the out.

Looking at both owner's threads on here, both TVs seem to have problems of one sort or another. And to be honest I'm put off by all of these.

Price aside, any comments / experiences on the 42GT50 , or recommendations on which to go for?

...is there a good LED that competes with these TVs with fewer problems?

Cheers.

I really think the problems for both sets are few and far between!

I think the GT50 is superb, buy from a Panasonic dealer and get the 6yr warranty, i believe this years plasma panels are soo much better than last year.

Search for anything online and you will find people have problems with anything & everything

I understand your apprehension but really just go for whichever you like but I really think Panasonic has the edge with plasma!

Contrast control in Cinema mode seems to be limited - there“s hardly any change from value 40 to 50 for example. In Normal mode there“s no such limits.

Colors in thx-modes look a little greenish / yellowish all over. There is no colour adjustments in thx modes so how could this be corrected?

I wonder if these can be effected in service menu?

Sometimes watching a film there are very short stops in the picture if there is motion or slow camera pan. IFC doesn“t seem to affect this much. This only happens with certain material, not noticed with blurays. What might be the cause here?

Would you buy a Samsung PS51E6500 over the ST or GT?

I would get the st over the gt and the Sammy over the panny. Currently got last yrs panny gt 42" model but looking to upgrade. Reason... for me it's a combo of less likely to have issues bigger size cheaper price.

End of the day, regardless which tv of the 2/3 u get as long as it has no issues that annoy you then u would be well happy regardless which model u get. (All my own opinions obviously)

I didn't like the frame on the ST so that ruled that out for me. I've gone for the gt50 , but wondering if Samsung would have been better.

How can you prefer the ST over the GT?

The GT is a better set albeit £200 more expensive

I think its to do with what areas its better, if not needed or noticed some may rather save £200.

Hi, I was wondering if you could help me with GT50. I've just bought this tv yesterday. In specification it says that media client can play MKV files. I have setup a share on my PC with Windows 8 to a film in mkv format, but when I go to this folder on the TV it can't see the file.
Am I missing something here?

ST50 also goes brighter than GT50 in its most accurate mode (THX and Professional are brightness-locked on GT50, True Cinema isn't on ST50).

Personally, I found there to be less false-contouring on the GT50 and also preferred the styling, hence I swapped from my ST50 to the GT50 as a result (back in May!).

I don't think Media Client will let you play MKV's from a PC.. Best to use a USB flash drive or USB HDD
