Getting it calibrated isn't an option for me unfortunately. Is there a starting point in the Pro modes that one can tweak?

If you google avs709 and download the disc it has some basic test patterns for contrast and brightness.
On a personal note i prefer gamma at 2.4 on my st.

The orbiter only moves around a few pixels so it's only going to make any IR have softer edges it won't stop it happening.

Cheers for that I'd asked the same and was going to go for it anyway (72 quid on Amazon), looks very close to the wall if you use the supplied mains plug?

The sanus vlt got posted on tge st 65 thread the other day. I looked at both vogel and omnimount and decided on omnimount, but i hadnt seen the sanus ones until they were posted recently and they look really quality items, so have a look at these also.

I know it's not the "right" thing for me to use, but is anyone willing to post or PM me their Colour settings for the VT50 (preferably 65"). The "Colour" number and anything you have in the advanced settings.

Need something to use as a start point.

It's all a bit green over here...

The front view can be seen on page 12 No.336 of this thread. Not sure that a view from the side is any use but here goes. By the way, the distance from the wall to the front of the 65vt50 plasma (with the Vogels) is about 7.5cm

Given that the screen protrudes about 23mm backwards and the 8405 sits 24mm from the wall I think you are pretty limited what you can actually use. According to the Vogel website you could use their Thin305 mount (with the 55") but given there is only 1.5cm clearance from the wall I'm not sure how!

Sorry to be a pest, I have another plasma-noob question.

In order to set my expectations I have a question about black levels.

When using THX Cinema mode in a room with no lights on, should I still be able to make out the widescreen bars on a 2.4:1 film? Should these black bars "blend" into the bezel? Or are they still going to be visible?

I've only had LCD's before so I'm wondering just how black black should be.

The ideal picture is you cant tell where the black bars are. They should disappear into dark screens.

This isnt always the case tho. A way to get this is a small ambient light. A warm glow with no direct focal point is best. Also making sure no light hits the front of the screen or your PQ is gone.

You really need a projector if you want to watch movies in a dark room

Dont agree with that, tvs manage brilliantly in a dark environment.

As you said yourself a small ambient light helps achieve good black levels with TVs, take away the ambient light and watch in a dark room and the screen is too bright and the blacks have gone, calibrate the screen to get the blacks back for the dark room and your dynamic range has gone.

Just received my 55VT50 just very quickly set it up, having come from three LED, the first reaction is how much duller the picture looks, but it is very early days so long as their are no major issues , I am very much hoping to keep this one.

Will we expect, in a future firmware update, that minor uniformity problem in the VT50 will be solved?

If you want to over work your eyes. Remember what we was told at the TPS meet. A little ambient light when watching tv to help stop your eyes from getting tired.

Never said not to use ambient light. Ive said only today to use an ambient light.

I was only replying to the comment that for dark environment you should have a projector and not a tv. I felt that was unfair as we saw what these tvs can do in dark environment. You yourself say how good the ST is in the dark.

What is wrong with a dark room with some ambient lighting ?

Am i meant to watch in direct sunlight instead ?

Exactly. Which is why i disagreed in my original statement in a darkened room you dont need a projector. Just a minor bit of ambient light is all you need.

Pitch black isnt good. Some ambient light eg lamp in corner of the room is perfect.
I admit i use to watch in a pitch black room and i use to fall asleep many a time.
Also going from a dark scene to a daylight one made me squint as it was like looking at the sun.
Now with a light behind the tv, some re adjustments of brightness and contrast ive yet to fall asleep and nolonger feel my eyes fry on bright scenes lol.
