I've had this set for around 10 days now, and I'm probably at around the 80 hour mark for usage.
Whilst I wasn't particularly impressed with some sources initially (very soft compared to a returned GT30 last year- green blobs!) this set is definitely improving with age.
Sky HD sources have become sharp and detailed for the most part, Blurays are just stunning. These are at a relatively dark set up due to lowish contrast settings (70 - which is the lowest compromise for me as the set is a little dark - I've seen recommended settings of 99).
I have a very slight buzz occasionally, which, when it's there, is hardly noticeable even in silent conditions - TV is not wall mounted.
The 46inch GT30 I had last year was probably a more appropriate size for the room(and the other half), but I've got used to it very quickly(as has she), and I'm really glad I went for this now. Would've gone for Panasonic, but just couldn't put up with the hassle with the reports of the latest round of problems. Once this Samsung is fully bedded in, I think it could be at least on a par for picture quality, if not better and without the green blobs!

Thats almost like stealing the tv.For the money i don't think you can buy better. I sent mine back due to excessive buzzing which drove me nuts. I got a vt50 instead.

Is it true that the European model has higher black levels of 0.06 cd/m2? The 60" has them at 0.02... 'sup with the difference and what's with the pot tweak? Would this tweak improve the black levels in the 51" model?

Having done the pot tweak on my D6900 I can say it makes a small difference, for something so risky Id not bother. I have some understanding of what Image doing and my set was very cheap, if you aren't confident Id not do it, if you paid full price Id not risk it, it is also quite risky for your own safety.

I was pleased to find out that the 60" had black levels of 0.02 cd/m2. 60" is too big for my bedroom though and I immediately looked for the 51" model and saw this unfortunate problem. Is the 0.06 cd/m2 black level from the 51" getting better over time? Is Samsung willing to release a firmware to improve the black levels? Puzzled why the US versions have the same black levels, while the European ones have different levels.

The black level improved on my 51"D6900 though I have also done the pot tweak.measurement wise I can't comment sorry, don't have a meter let alone one that goes that low. If you can still get one its worth having as Im sure it wouldn't cost a great del. The black level on my set is good enough for me for a while, my biggest gripe now is its looking a bit flat at the top end. Going to get a meter and see what I can do with it.

Best thing to do 6500 wise is to go and demo, try not to get caught up in the measurements its about what you see not a meter.

Ya, I'll try to demo later on, since I'm in Romania and big retailers don't have newer models on display, only online smaller shops deliver them.

Posted on the 60 incher thread last week and today, but no response thus far...

Any other owners of this tv had problems getting Freeview HD channels? Auto-tune is finding nothing for me... I've got Virgin HD, so not exactly crucial at the moment, but recording to a USB HDD doesn't work from this source (and I imagine Sky HD would be the same).

Other than that, and Lovefilm not working at the moment on this set (it works fine on the Samsung bluray player I have, so it must be the tv - hopefully fixable by a future firmware/smarthub update), very happy with my purchase - pq is great as far as my eyes are concerned!

But would be interesting to know if others have the same problem, or better still have found solutions...

Since I am close to purchasing, and mid-to-long term image retention is a concern of mine, I was wondering if those of you watching a fair amount of sports - and perhaps business channels - have encountered any IR which took hours or days or weeks to go away.

From what I have gleaned, while the large sized e6500/e8000s have a lower mll than the 51", the latter might be a bit more prone to IR (I appreciate that the larger E6500/E8000 are very good with respect to resisting IR)

60inch Samsung E6500 plasma TV - AllShare Play - YouTube

Can 51" owners take a look at the video after 10:50 in the dark and say if black bars are lighter than that? (I know it won't be the same like human eye can perceive but curiosity kills ) Thank you.

No good judging from that vid
Put it this way if your in to blacks then go bigger size or Panasonic, if your not bothered (or coming from an lcd or poor performing/old plasma) then go for it
IMO Samsung takes some beating for most things (aside from blacks)

Still loving this tv (possibly a little more than before!!) but I have a bit of an issue which I can't find any info on...

The tv seems to interfere with my internet signal from a sky router... I've altered to every router channel, but the internet intermittently goes very slow (sometimes stops completely). If I turn the tv off, the internet comes back to speed immediately. I've put the ferrite cores around both ends of the power cable.

Has anyone had this problem? Can anyone help?!!

Thanks in advance!

Hello,
Iīm going to buy a 50" plasma. I know itīs still the same "ST50 or E6500 talk", but... my problem is a little bit specific. I donīt watch regular TV, so logos and such donīt bother me. I watch 90% of movies and series with subtitles and hereīs the thing. Should I be worried about the IR problem with ST50 as it is well known for that or should I go for E6500 which is said to be almost IR free? I fear that repeated displaying of subtitles may result in some serious IR problems. Anybody can help with this? To complete, occasionally I do a bit of gaming (PC, Wii).

This will be my first plasma TV, now I have a 5-year old LCD (Sony KDL40-S3000), so I donīt think black levels are going to be a problem with either Sam or Pan.

Any ideas very much appreciated, thanks.

I'm not sure you'll get a problem with subtitiles - the Mrs left my E6500 on a channel without a signal last night which puts a couple of boxes up on screen. These boxes do move up and down in small steps, but they're still straight lines on for quite some time (around the 8hours we were asleep). I did see a faint grey line going down the screen which nearly sent me into a tv-returning panic, but that disappeared very quickly when I put a normal view on. Basically, the subtitles shouldn't have a totally static image the whole time, so you should be fine with the e6500, can't speak for the ST50. I suppose the usual carefulness should apply to the early stages with the tv though...

Whats gaming like on this TV?

Currently torn between this and the ST50, but the more i read about the ST50 the more im put off with the IR problems etc etc

I play COD,FIFA and other FPS's so quick response is a must tbh.

Thanks

Regarding the black levels, how would they compare to my Panasonic TX-P42G10?

Thanks

Hey Buddy,

I've just bought the 60inch version of this after having some Panasonic Plasma's over the last year.

I've tried the Panasonic GT30, owned the VT30 for 11 months, upgraded that for this years GT50, and after going through 5 of them due the vertical bands issue that this years Panasonics seem to suffer with, have now landed with the E6500.

Prior to last year, I had ALWAYS been a LCD guy, and I found the jump to Plasma quite jarring at first.

Most noteably with Dynamic False Contouring, I just couldnt get used to it, but felt it was just a trait of Plasma technology that wasnt present on LCD's and so it was just a matter of getting used to it.

Anyhow I could go on, but cut a long story short, I've been through many different Panasonics, suffered some image burn on my VT30 along the way (Game HUD and got used to seeing Dynamic False Contouring, all because the reviews state that Panasonic produce the best Plasmas on the market.....how could ALL the reviews be wrong, right???

Anyhow, Im now running in the Samsung E6500, and I have NEVER seen a TV look as good as this does.

NO Dynamic False Contours, and absoloutley no image retention, and its not even bedded in yet.

I appreciate people may have different opinions to me, but as someone who was afraid to leave the Panasonic camp as every other Plasma brand supposedly trailed behind, all I can say is Im glad I did make the move, because now I've got an image which is so good it astounds me. I just wish I had made the move sooner.

You know what, thats exactly how I feel about it all....cant believe I put up with all that set exchanging nightmare, when all I had to do was get a refund and get the E6500...I too am amazed at how good the picture is, and the AR filter on this is far superior to the Panasonic filter...I have tried to get IR on this set, just to see if it is as good in that respect as they state, SKY NEWS HD on pause for 57 minutes, straight to a greyscale slide to check for IR.....nothing at all...not a dicky bird. My panasonic ST50...i think it was my third replacement, I viewed SKY HD NEWS(not on pause) for abut an hour, had IR for two weeks, infact it didnt even go, the set got replaced first...

So according to the reviewers these sets are neck and neck, hard to split them.

So after owning both, here is my way to split them..

Samsung V Panasonic

Line bleed practically non existant on Samsung
Can be seen on lots of content on Panasonic, even the BBCD HD logo will bleed slightly if you look

Dynamic False Contouring or looking like a photoshop filter...

Samsung None Panasonic Lots of examples and will be seen on lots of content

Excessive dither

Samsung not an issue....Panasonic very evident at night, especially on a dark scene,

Screen Uniformity

Samsung absolutely as youd expect a Plasma screen to look
Panasonic Absolutely like youd expect a low end LCD to look...vertical bands and green tints and even magenta tints

Image Retention

Samsung none Panasonic can vary from very bad to slight, but care must always be taken.

Buzzing

Samsung seems to suffer more from this than Panasonic, but all Plasmas can show this trait, but in my case it is silent, and was silent on all seven of my Panasonics also.

Picture qulaity, ie motion handling and SD performance is hard to split, almost equal.

Black Level.

Samsung is very good and although not as low as the Panasonic, unless you are in a completely dark room there is not a lot in it, but during the day the E6500 has a superiro filter and black levels are better .

Its a tough call isnt it.......which one should you buy.....so hard to split them both....

Beggars belief really.

I couldnt agree more, a great breakdown of both.

This is my second E6500, after my first came with a dead pixel, so I swapped it out, the new one has a perfect panel, but does have a bit more buzz.

Its not LOUD but its quite high pitched, so you can occasionally percieve it being there when watching things at low volume.....But its certainly not a deal breaker for me.

To any prospective buyers out there with worries or concerns about buzzing, brightness pops etc etc put your worries aside and go for it, once you see this thing in action you'll be glad you did.

I'm not wrong that this is a crazy good deal for this set am I?

SAMSUNG PS51E6500, 51 Series 6 Full HD 1080p 3D Smart Plasma TV with Freeview HD | Rgbdirect

Ģ750 (+Ģ35 delivery). I've only been able to find the 60in version in shops, and even then it was Currys, so I had no expectation of being able to actually judge the thing in there, but I'm strongly considering biting the bullet on this, even though for the last 2ish months I was almost certainly getting a 42st50.

It's you is it. I have just bought one of these from them and have just had an email saying they are currently out of stock,

You must have bought them all lol

Not fussed about waiting a week or two but how often do great offers like this end up with 'sorry we can't source any more of these items'

We shall see
