Don't see anything like that on this TV.

Yeah it has an eco mode and dynamic contrast, both of those are turned off and it still does it.

The good thing I suppose is, that if the brightness pops are the same on each E550 (which I am starting to think it is) then it will surely have to be updated by Samsung in a firmware.

My new one comes tomorrow I think, so I will post back on here with my findings!
Is the 3D any good? Is the motion any good, any ghosting?

I must admit, I haven't watch 3D much, I have been more worried about trying to sort the brightness pops out. I've watched about 20 minutes of a 3D blu-ray and my untrained eyes couldn't see any difference between my GT30 and this one. I will check out the olympics later in 3D and let you know about ghosting

Trying to decide whether to get the e550 or the LG pm670t. Did anyone consider the LG as an alternative?

Cheers
Barry.

I too am considering buying a PS51E550 but have also come across a Samsung LED UE46EH6030 which may also be a good panel, but can't find any reviews on it, as it's recently new. Does anyone know which would be the best panel to buy?

It looked better than in the cinema! But really depends on the movie... some give you more headache than other movies. I have to try out some more full SBS movies, I downloaded Avatar Full SBS and Half SBS, but the Full SBS didnt play. Not sure if it was the movie itself or the full SBS, so have to try out with another movie. Frame Packed movie did work, although the TV didn't really recognize it as such.

Didn't notice ghosting or such....

I found only 2 minor things... the mirroring of the tv, which is really annoying. And the tv interferes with the remote for y digital tv receiver. Which is not a huge problem as I will get an CI+ anyway.

Whats the SD TV like on it with the screen so big?

Also I read on another post some people recommend being min of 12ft away from it due to size of screen, I will be closer to the screen than that, is it ok under 12ft viewing??

Thanks

Barry

Well replacement TV came today...

Still has huge brightness pops, as I expected. This is a "feature" on this TV and not a "problem". I have found some settings that pretty much hide the brightness pops, but its also made the picture very dark.

My advice to anyone considering this TV is, if you think brightness pops will annoy you (and by brightness pops I mean HUGE changes in brightness frequently) then don't get this TV.

Now I need to decide if I am just going to put up with it and hope that Samsung get round to releasing a fix via an update or go through all that hassle of getting VERY to refund it.

3rd TV in a year, the perfect TV doesn't exist...

Too bad mate. You might need to give Samsung a ring and see what they are going to do about it. Not sure if I will buy this TV now, will see if my currys store has one on display and go from there. I will let you know what I end up with as I'm also interested in Samsung series 6 UE46EH6030 that currys are selling but can find no reviews on it.

I've had no image burn problem or infact any hassles at all with the set,the ONLY downside to it is in my opinion the Remote lay-out.

There are plenty of user reviews for this set if you search google & none mention the brightness pops.. The odd mention of the reflective issue..

So maybe it is a case of a bad batch & some people are more sensitive to certain things?

I watched this set for about 20 mins down at currys on loop & did not spot pops - not that I was looking for them... The loop had fairly mixed content too. I might have another look at it to be sure...

Though I am upgrading from a 32" 720p LCD TV that is about 5+ years old

So, wife and I are very happy with this set and just wish we went bigger. So the 51" is now for sale (advertised in the forums classifieds section) and we are now going to purchase the 60 incher!

Our experience with the tv has been great, no buzzing, no retention - some evidence of the pops, but to be honest we are no pq connoiseurs and only noticed it on a bright white screen (wife has not noticed it). The 3D is excellent, HD is excellent.

Ordered the tv from ebuyer today as Currys are so useless! Plus they had put up the price from £759 to £799 in the last couple of days..

Said I wanted to buy the TV plus the samsung HT-E4500 bluray cinema system - total: £1038, Currys offered me a £20 discount! Plus I would then have to pay £15 to have the bluray system delivered as it was out of stock & I could not pick it up from the shop!!

Unhappy VERY Dissappointed

Ordered two weeks go from VERY £909 with 4 year warranty. Told on Thursday last week being delivered on Monday there between 1.30pm and 5.30pm. 5.30pm came and went and no tv. Phoned delivery company "Yodel" back to be told driver is out tv will be there. Driver then calls to say he has had an extra 10 parcels put on his run and he cannot deliver and we have to call back to re-deliver. By then VERY phone lines have closed. Checked Very website and the tv was loaded on to a truck 7 miles away on the Monday morning at 7.15am. My other half calls back the next day to be told Friday "today". Delivery company then calls back about 5.30pm last night to be told delivery would be on Monday. Partner calls VERY as per my memo, Tell Very to stick their tv up their arse. Bummed no tv and no deal as good as Verys. Saw last guy on here bought from Ebuyer. Ordered from them with 3 year warranty £872ish to be delivered tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Unhappy Freaked out...

Guys i bought this plasma and was very impressed by its pq
I am from dubai and this tv took 3 weeks to get delivered to me after i made the purchase. Its almost a month now since we payed for the plasma and i just used it for 3 days ,and this is the reason why..
After 3 days of viewing ,my tv started showing dark patches which was all over the screen like its burnt. I rang up the service center and they took my tv.
They said me that there is something wrong with one of the component and they are waiting for it to be delivered.
Its been 2 weeks now....i am all desperate to get it back...this is our first hdtv..upgraded from a crt...

Well I have decided to keep mine, I just can't be bothered to faff around with returning and having begging them to refund instead of replacing.

Before, I had some settings that stopped the pops happening as much, but it always felt like I was compromising the picture quality to hide the pops. Now I have found a setting that keeps the brightness pops down (don't get me wrong, they are still visible but not as much) and for me, the picture quality is nearly spot on.

Let me know if anyone wants me to share these settings, I must add people will probably hate them but I find them fine

-edit-

What sharpness do you guys have it on? I can't really decide if I should have it low (in the 30's or have it around 50)

Ok Update. I had bought from ebuyer before so wasnt too much of an ask to buy from them again. Received the Tv yesterday morning 9.09am. Set it up in about 5 minutes myself although I would recommend two ppl. Watched TV picture is amazing and also Sky HD. Watched Blu ray films on the bargain Blu ray player I got from Asda, Toshiba £39 picture is crisp clear and sharp. Looked at a tutorial online and used 3D on the PS3. Dont know what people are on about 3D is amazing on PS3. Watched Piranha 3D and 3D was good, watched Megaminds and 3D was amazing. Watched some films from my WD HD Live TV Hub and again quality was amazing. Played Pro Evo 2012 on PS3 in 3D again immense but took a bit of getting used to that camera angle. Played some COD on the Xbox and again picture quality was great. No bad pixels and no problems. Only negatives is I dont know if it has settings for each setting but the contrast keeps going up to 95 this maybe because of dynamic setting. I know on my LCD samsung 40 those brightness pops or whatever the are called happened on my old tv on dynamic setting as it was trying to keep a balanced brightness. No witnessed any of this on my new tv. Only downside as mentioned by someone on here, screen is very reflective to I may have to put the tv back on my wall with my new bracket that I got in a Tescos bargain 2 x Omnimounts previously marked at £100 down to £50 then down to £25 so £50 for the two and I have put one on the old tv in the bedroom. I went to the checkout and the brackets rang up as £12.50 each. Great bargain. Not to mention the two sets of 3D Glasses I got a while back from Brighthouse at £15. Two sets with Megaminds Blu ray with the two pairs with the TV I now have 6 sets of glasses. Well happy. So much so my hassles with Very are in the past. Ebuyer £875 with 3 years warranty and Very £909 with 1 year manufacturing warranty and another 3 years.

@scottthehat:- yes i am :-)..called up the customer service and still they don't have the part.
They are not ready to replace it with a new set either. I am out of options right now. I was planning to get a panasonic HTIB SC-XH 175..but since the TV is screwing things up for me i have to wait.

Will repair or modification to my new plasma mess things up further?? The thought of them opening up my new plasma gives me a gut feeling .... its brand new and under repair already..I seriously doubt the longevity of this.

Hi all,

Does anyone have any decent calibration settings for this panel? I've currently got it set to "movie" with all auto contrast and other settings off, seems pretty decent but perhaps a little too dark in some scenes.

Thanks

I only have Sky HD through that TV. So SD through the Sky box is good and HD is obviously better.

Hello, folks!

My old (as in 11 year old!) TV recently blew up and now I need a new one. I've been browsing like hell and know absolutely nothing about, well, anything to do with plasma, LED etc.

The two models that have caught my eye is this one and the Samsung PS51E490, which is HD Ready. I'm a major movie buff, so picture and sound quality are my top priorities. I was just wondering if anyone here has had experience with both of these models and if so, which was the best.

well for start the e490 is a 720p panel and the e550 is a 1080p panel, also if you want sound quality then a av reciever is a must if your that much of a film buff.
if you can affor the e550 go for it over the e490.

It's a few more pennies from the piggy bank, but this technology thing definitely plays to the whole You Get What You Pay For. Thank you

I'm delighted with my E550 now, tweaked the settings a bit and now it's easily as good as the Panasonic GT30 I had, and that picture blew my mind!.

And what's even better, this TV has no uneven lighting at the back of the screen and no dirty screen effect at all while watching football (which is why my GT30 had to be returned).
