Gotta say Avatar in 3D on this beast is great!
The Yamaha does not do Dolby HD audio. Be careful.

As you know Im no expert on AVs but when I was looking I found the Demons better for films and gaming, more if a solid sound with plenty of base.

Unhappy Banding (P42ST50B)

Hey all,

I picked up a P42ST50B from Richer Sounds last weekend after having returned 2x LG LM620T because of the terrible banding and DSE that made it unwatchable for me. I went Plasma under the impression that they don't suffer the same horrific backlight problems as these new LED TVs since there is no backlight. How disappointed I am then to find my new Plasma also has banding issues which show up during normal viewing, basically any panning shots with solid colours highlight the bands in a very annoying way. This is with True Cinema and the hdtvtest settings and all the jazzy settings off, Sky HD, Blu-rays, its there.

I've attached a screenshot of my TV, this is straight from my camera (image shrunk to fit on forum), showing Slide15-1080p.jpg from the Evangelos Angelides break-in image set (Evangelos Angelides - Home). The last right hand third of the screen has large dark bands with thin light bands inbetween. This is actually more visible (and annoying) during live TV with panning shots than on static images like the photo, but I do find the green (e.g. grass) and grey (e.g. snow, clouds) shades show it up the worst. I was watching some HD wildlife tonight, lovely shots of open grassland, left side of screen looks great, right side of screen has dark and light vertical bands on the grass, grrrrr!

I'm in two minds about exchanging for another TV of the same model, I've already returned 2x LG LED TVs so this will be a 3rd return in as many weeks, to be honest I'm getting fed up of shifting TVs back and forth to the shops. My old Samsung LE46M86 (6 years old) had minor clouding in the corners which was barely noticeable, nothing as distracting as what I've experienced with these large bands on new TVs, I don't get it, I was expecting TVs to be so much better since my now ancient Samsung was manufactured, it seems the industry has gone backwards in terms of quality.

As a side note I will say the actual picture quality on the ST50 is brilliant and much better than my old Samsung or the LG LED TVs, but it's all for nothing with the on-screen bands drawing my eye away from the actual content.

Advice?

Try a replacement mate. If you can ask to try before you leave the store.
Try taking some content that would show dse(dirty screen effect) eg panning across the sky.
