Points:

1. Buzzing, both top left and louder top right, can hear this at least 3m away, my mate said he can hear it as well so it's not just me. Not acceptable.

2. Whilst testing Avatar (3D and 2D), he noticed a thin black line from top to bottom, roughly in the centre - stopped the film and put on something else, black line still there. Played the 'breakin DVD' (just cycles through full screen colours) and yep, the line was still there - not black, but like a negative of the colour shown. Also a couple of blue pixels at the top of the line permanently on.

3. Default settings very high, something like 92 on the contrast!

4. Picture very sparkly when I'm close, as all plasmas I've seen are, but is it normal on a plasma to be overly noticable? (It's my first one!).

5. Firmware 1019.

6. 3D very good, supplied glasses have a very small viewing area, right have to buy some bigger / better ones like the 3700s!

I'm going to call John Lewis tomorrow and get it replaced. At least it's going back for a real display fault, not just the buzzing.
Yup thats the Tattoo Buzzing,

That black line is definately a fault

Default settings on these sammys are way off.

Yes if its your first plasma you will notice the 'Sparkly as you call it up close, this is just plasma Dithering and wont be a problem from normal veiw distance.

F/W 1019 is the latest but not the greatest.

The 3050 Glasses are small with thick rims, they work for 3D just aswell though and have a very slightly less yellowing effect that translates to whiter whites onscreen. most would not notice this though and the 3100's have a larger lens area.

Hope you get one of the silent ones for your replacement

It's weird that the 3D on this TV is not as good as the passive LG I viewed in Currys a few weeks back. On the LG the picture really appeared to pop out - so much so that my 3 year old ran away scared! On the Sammy I'm finding that I have to concentrate hard to look for the 3D - and it's not that great when I find it. It's OK, but bit of a disappointment seeing as I thought Active was better quality.

Even on Megamind, I'm not that impressed, compared to when I saw Polar Bear Express on the LG display.

Or am I doing something wrong? (I'm using a PS3 to play Megamind ...and yes the glasses are on!)

Some films have more pop out than others, best way to compare is to watch the same film.
Passive sets are good but the viewing angle are awful.
Try despicable me, that has great 3d.
Some films are more depth than pop out in your face.

Are you actually playing 3d and not the 2d version?

Ok, just had an email back from Samsung support about viewing distances

"Thank you for contacting Samsung.

The recommended viewing distance is 3x the screen size. So as your
television is 59 inches the recommended viewing distance is 177 inches."

So that's 14 feet, I think they've mistaken screen height for screen size there

This is laughable, through various websites and information I've found It's ranged fron 6 to 21 feet being the ideal distance for 59 inches.

Samsung themselves have quoted 3 different distances. I'm going to sit in the garden and watch the TV I think

No had quite a lengthy argument with JL about that.. Clearly states on the box that glasses are included but JL were adamant that because there's no mention of glasses included on their website that I shouldn't really expect any! after a few phone calls, emailing photos of the box and threatening to exchange they agreed to do the right thing.

Viewing distance..,

Diagonal measurement × 2.5 (corresponding to 20-degree viewing angle)

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optim...ewing_distance

THX ranges

THX still contends that the optimum viewing distance is a position where the display occupies a 40 degree view angle for the viewer, they too provide a range recommendation. The minimum viewing distance is set to approximate a 40 degree view angle, and the maximum viewing distance is set to approximate 28 degrees.[25]

THX
Screen Size Recommended Range
35" 3.5' – 5.0' (1.0 – 1.5 m)
40" 4.0' – 6.0' (1.2 – 1.8 m)
50" 5' – 7.5' (1.5 – 2.2 m)
60" 6.0' – 9.0' (1.8 – 2.7 m)

I specifically asked when I ordered mine about the glasses and they told me on the phone (after checking with someone else) that they now came as standard. Got 2 pairs with mine as per the box says. He did say that they would need to update their website - but of course they haven't!!

Must have missed it, but why is it called a tattoo buzz?

And yes, so do I! (It was really loud)

A few of us have found the buzz settles down after a while but unfortunately that's not always the case.. Your always gonna get noise/buzz to some degree from a huge plasma screen and IMO its a small drawback of the tech. Good luck with your replacement, hope it has a more uniformed display this time.

I have ordered mine from very, just hope they supply them, knowing my luck they wont and they will do nothing about it.
I will have to wait and see
Roll on next week

Result, the engineer has authorised a return. Hinted that they would refund if I wanted because his boss reckons I'm costing them thousands

Decisions now. Another D6900? 55" LED, VT30? or dig deep and go for the 64"D8000?

I find Samsungs active 3D far better for pop out effects than passive.. No way should you be looking for 3D it's just an obviously natural effect.. I don't use games consoles to play 3D movies but yes maybe you need to double check your settings!

What was the matter with your set, is this the first you have had?
Your opinions on it when working?

Any other major faults with the set?
Was looking to get Passive LG but they have DSE, poor viewing angle and bad lag.

Apart from the buzzing (which only recently became worse) and the DSE it's a cracking set at the price.

Firmware 1019 spoilt the vibrancy a bit and I could never quite manage to get deep black levels without crush. The fact I was constantly tinkering with the settings means I wasn't entirely happy with it, maybe that was just me.

I might still get another 6900, I don't know.

But what settings?

The Cathedral demo is good, but not great... Megamind 3D is just 'OK'.

I have a Toshiba set which had a lot of bleed so sent that one back and the new one had a smaller amount and the blacks were not that black but kept changing the settings and got to a point where it stopped affecting me and now I dont even notice it.

My panasonic plasma had the purple snake effect
Seems like every tv has some problems these days.

Majority of owners are very happy with this set it's only the odd few that have suffered with loud buzzing.. Was a major concern for me when buying and mine did buzz quite loud but I found it to settle down after a while.. Was never an issue during quiet periods in movies though and no where near as loud as my games consoles, virgin TiVo or laptop

I am worried now as I have ordered this set but my one doesn't come with extra warranty and it will cost me over £300 from very to get an extra 3 years.
Do you think the buzzing noise if not from the first day can come at any time?

Should I take warranty with samsung directly?

Cheers, maybe a 55 inch LED D7000 or 8000, couldn't drop below that size. I need someone to "pro and con" me.

I want something at least 55", minimal buzz, vibrant colour without banding/DSE, deep blacks with no crush, I think 2K would be my limit.

Warranty isn't worth paper it's printed on IMO, you have consumer rights in your favour.. Arenamans is the first case I've heard about buzzing coming after a while, most have this from start so not really sure.. Try find one in a store and put your ear to the back.. Will give You an idea what sort of buzz to expect
