Quick Question about Self Calibration

After placing my cheap and cheerful PC monitor next to my VT30, I could see the vast difference between the good color representation on the monitor, and the truly awful results on the TV. Even the THX and standard PRO settings were overly saturated by some colour, and were crushing blacks badly. I was thinking about sending this one back as it looks exactly the same as my last faulty unit, but not quite so severe.

Because I had a point of reference, I decided to change some of the more detailed RGB settings in the PRO1 profile.

I don't really understand how I did it but I made the problem with the TV almost go away, but now I'd like to get it calibrated properly, because I'm sure I only got half way towards doing it right. To me the picture is watchable again, but I'd like to go the whole hog ang get it near perfect.

So I would like to buy an X-Rite i1 Display 2, and probably use Calman's 4.x software to perform an auto calibration, since it supports a direct connection to the TV over IP.

I have found a 'new' Pantone Eye One Display 2, and I understand Pantone has been acquired by X-Rite. Does this mean that what I am intending to buy is exactly the the same as an X-Rite unit? Could the unit I'm buying be a few years old, albeit new but possibly it's calibration may have drifted a little while it's been sat on the shelf? The physical devices look identical to each other, so I'm assuming there's just been a re brand. The Pantone unit is brand new and sealed however.

Cheers

MR

Thanks for your reply Richard, but I've decided to go down the route of doing it myself, partly out of interest, partly for economy purposes and partly so I can readjust as the TV ages.

I've already used Calman to connect directly to the TV, and have been able to manipulate various settings through the software, in real time seeing the results on the TV instantly.

My hope is that once I have a semi decent meter (I understand the Pros use meters that cost in the thousands) I'll just be able to run through the auto calibration as shown in this demo video:

Good luck with that then! I'd certainly recommend reading through the VT30 calibration thread if you havent already done so, as these sets behave quiet differently and unless you understand some of the limitations/ real world ways to approach calibration with this particular set you may well end up banging your head off the proverbial wall and still not getting a reasonably 'standardised picture'!
