I am currently using SERVIIO Serviio media server media server. I installed it onto my SYNOLOGY NAS and its much better then before. Its capable of playing most of my HD files without chopping. Not all of them unfortunately.

This dlna job is rubbish. I have 3 different devices and have problems with them all. To complicate things further what they play depends on who's dlna server you use, for instance the sammy tv won't play .mkv or .m4v with twonky but will with media tomb and tvmobili and without transcoding. It's a pain in the backside getting a common HD format that will work cross platform with my devices and server software without having to encode taking hours and hours I want to rip and watch not rip and bugger about for hours on end..

All I want to do is be able to watch my media content from a common server (in my case mybookworlds & sharespace) on my big ass TV, Humax Fox 2T pvr and a Panasonic bluray player all of which are in different rooms hence having the NAS's. Now You would have thought that all theses devices would all play the same files with all the sotware but it's becoming clear that they don't. DLNA yet another non standard standard.

Watching 'non-full screens - old format'

There's always going to be an effect as different parts of the screen will "age" at different speed but let's forget about the theoretical aspects now and just concentrate on the practical effects

Here's the background

Live in Thailand, have just ordered a PS59 (as the 60' LED is 60% more expensive), have 30 useful cable TV channels of which 6 are 3/4 and the rest 9/16. Will sit approx 2.5 meters from the TV

I expect that less than 50% would be spent on watching wide format and the rest leaves me with not-so-pleasing black areas above and below the picture causing different parts of the TV screen to age at different speed

If I assume 50 / 50 watching;
Will I ever be able to spot degradation (with my naked eye) and what's an approximate percentage when we can assume no practical effect is ever going to be noticed?
How will it affect my viewing? Will blacks turn less black? Apologies for the stupid question but I simply don't know
When will the practical effects become noticeable at 50/50? One year - 5 years?

How can I do to reduce the effects? Leave the TV on during the night having the sofa watching wide format? Reduce brightness?

Another question that I don't really want to hear the answer for; Should I really consider spending 60% more on the LED considering the 50/50 viewing?

Thanks for advice
Michael

You will be lucky to get an answer to these questions, you will be even more lucky if any answers you do get turn out to be 100% correct. Sorry I can't be of more help..

Dont think they will work with the D550 the Samsung 3050 and 3100 3D glasses can be had quite cheaply if you shop around.

OK, the PS59 has arrived and looks great where it stands on the floor... Temporarily

The TV has no problems taking my Seagate 2 TB USB hard disk and plays mkv files up to approx 8 GB without any stutter, it stutters for the first 5 minutes or so when files are 8 to 12 GB and a bit longer for even larger files. I believe the limitation is in the hard disk and not the TV so not going to blame Samsung for that

But... My wife can't speak English... When connecting he hard disk directly to the TV - How to select and show the subtitles in the mkv files? I can't find it

Hi mate

I have a 58B550 tweaked to unlock the USB. As far as I am aware you cannot switch subtitles on and off, you need a media player to do that. Hence I have a WDTV connected via HDMI also. For the price of WDTV's these days it's well worth it, also no problems with playback of large files.

Regards

Changing things in the service menu can brick your set if you change the wrong thing. Don't change anything in there unless you know what you are doing. Anything you change that damages your set will not be covered under warranty.

Welcome to the forum Jack59 please dont post things like this without warning of possible damage being donr to peoples sets. Please also be careful in there yourself....That is also a US site and sets do differ from UK sets.

Well, I was just answering someones question who was asking. It's kinda like what you do with the cell phones, hacking into it, which is quite common, which also can brick your phone if your not careful or don't know what your doing. I don't do either. I like my TV and Cell just the way it is.

Sorry if I said something wrong... so, most of you from this forum are from across the big pond?

I have had the PS59D550 for a few days now (bought in Thailand - asian version). I am pleased with most things but also have a few question marks

I think that picture is somewhat dark. I have to set cell light to maximum 20 and pic is still a bit dark, I'm even using gamma +1 or 2. - There was issues with some firmware versions, did they produce dark picture? I'll get my firmware version this weekend

Colour space: Surprise and what's going on? I only have Auto and Native - Where do people change all the other settings Red_r-43, Red_g-6, Red_b-5... for red, green, blue, yellow, cyan, magenta? I have been in to the service menu but couldn't find it there either. Do I have a firmware version that doesn't support that or do I have to change to the 7000 to get to it? I was hoping that I wouldn't have to do that

Thanks in advance
Michael

Oh, one more

When watching 3D - Is it worth getting the Avatar 3D version compared to watching the normal Avatar and use 2D to 3D? What and how big is the difference?

2D to 3D is cool... but nowhere as good as the original real 3D versions.

I would never use 2D to 3D as a substitute for proper 3D. In fact I struggle to see the benefit for it full stop.

That was not what I meant. Of course real 3D is best, by far. But sometimes when you don't have 3D on hand or for a particular show, 2d to 3d is better than nothing. I don't use it much as I'm spoiled watching real 3D.

Thanks for feedback

How about Colour Space? Do you only have Native and Auto or do you have all the other settings Red_r-43, Red_g-6, Red_b-5... for red, green, blue, yellow, cyan, magenta? If you do, where do you change it?

Looks to me like only Native and Auto.
What is the difference between those two anyways.

i have the 55 and its reflective as hell.. iirc the 6900 has an anti reflective coating - worth the money for that feature alone if you can get a good deal.

also - where you getting it from and how much if you dont mind me asking?

Depends on your room and viewing conditions. If you have a rather light room with sunlight or other things causing reflections in the TV, then the anti-reflective coating really works pretty well.

If you like me don't have any light sources causing problematic reflections, then No, it is not worth it

Problem with the BT/Glasses?

Any of you guys had problems with D550's Bluetooth transmiter? My glasses just stopped turning on one day. I turn on the 3D function on the TV but glasses wont follow.

I tried with 4 pairs of glasses, tried changing batteries, tried updating the firmware, but its a no go. Ended up sending it on RMA, its still there now for the last 2,5 weeks... they said my TV is exotic, lol, so they need some time to fix it

Anyone had any problems with the 3D glasses?
