Two very different sets, no two G30s are alike let alone a VT30 and G30, the settings on a VT30 will be very different to the G30. You'd be better off getting a calibration disk and setting your set up by eye.

Does anyone know if there are any companies in N Ireland who do ISF calibration?

Got my 50 inch G30 today after deciding I couldn't live with my buzzing Sammy 6900. No 3D just good old-fashioned 'no frills' PQ. Thats what I thought......

Turned on, plugged in and excellent - my own private lightening display. Flashing green light from side of panel and a chainsaw loud electrical buzz. Back to square one

Very strange ? Mine has been dead quiet ! I do use a Belkin PF30 mains conditioner , don't know if that helps ? But it's quiet .

Currys delivery guys were great ! TV was brand new and unused , they even made sure I was happy that screen was undamaged and pristine ! So don't fret.

I love it so far , just do the internet update straight away and it should be fine , use the THX to run it in .

Oh well...theyve missed their delivery slot which I paid £20 for. Next time I contemplate buying from PCW I will get my g/f to nag me senseless until I change my mind.

Wonder if they will turn up at all?

Well - the TV arrived 2 hours late, but the guys who delivered it were so apologetic and helpful (even helped me fit the TV to the stand), that I wont be complaining.

My first impression is that the TV is incredible value for sub £600. Gorgeous picture which will only improve, and thus far ive found none of the niggles that have affected people. Will be a strain to leave the set in THX mode as tbh that does seem way too dim, but I will do the sensible thing I guess.

Firmware was 1213 so thats next on the list.

I may dislike PC World with a passion, but thanks to them Ive got an excellent value plasma. Fingers crossed I never have to speak to them again

Ordered a TX-P50G30b

Just orderd my TX-P50G30b from Currys. Strange feeling of betrayal to all the decent retailers out there, however at £579 I can't bring myself to pay the extra £400 that most people seem to be charging. I am excited to be moving on from my 7 year old TH-42PE30 standard def. only plasma, that to be fair still holds it's own on SD pics really well, and has been a delight to own. I paid £2500 for it in Feb 2005!

Now just a slight nervous feeling that I'll have to deal with Currys if any of the mentioned problems are present! Lets hope not!

be gentle

finally plunged in and bought this to replace my 6 yr old sagem 50" dlp.
got it thru pixmania. was slightly worried but it arrived this a.m and my, am I happy!
just a couple of questions for the more savvy than I am crew.
first-this watching on THX/cinema for a few hours. what does it achieve?
I`ve set the contrast at 75%
the brightness, colour, sharp all at 50%.
Vivid colour is now on(seemed a bit dark without)
Is CATS necessary?
PNR off. What noise?
Advanced setting are off, other than
Resolution Enhancer -MId

second-and this is more important for me. with the old telly, I had a humax
hd receiver and an onkyo surround system. easy. aerial-humax-
amp-good noise.
with this panny, the aerial obviously into telly.
but how do I feed the sound via external speakers? I guess
the more savvy will be raising their eyebrows , but please
enlighten me!

thanks in advance for your patience!
p.s set it up thru the humax as b4, but thats supposed to be going elsewhere!

p.s 2 What would be a good ,suitable Wireless wifi adaptor?

All other settings off

On my set there is a massive jump in overall brightness and pop when changing from Cinema to Normal & I'm just checking this is correct
I'm aware that Normal has a noisier image then Cinema so ignore that I'm just trying to find out if my experience is the norm, I believe it is as I understand Cinema mode has a capped light output anyway
Hi , I tried these settings on both , difficult to see much difference in the level of brightness ? look very much the same .

I know it's personal preference but what settings does everyone recommend for Blu-ray viewing on a 42" G30?

I think THX is probably the best, I did have it setup on Dynamic with 24p Smooth Film at MAX which gave the fake/speed up/filmed on a handycam feel, that I just can't get used to.

Don't use dynamic , looks terrible ? Just use normal or cinema or pro1 and tweak to your own taste ! have a go, you can always switch back to default.

YouTube definition - no HD

Hi guys,

Just a warning for anybody, by default the YouTube app at the moment does not display HD. You can watch only SD- sucks big time!

There is some workaround available via a proxy but still to be verified. (forcing the URL send to Youtube to include hd=1 flag)

If anybody knows more about this, please chime in.

Yeah when you sit in a dark room watching a film and you switch from THX to Dynamic it's so bright you need sunglasses on!

Strange, thanks for doing that but I have differing results
Went into Comet/Currys today and there was one on display at both
On both sets Normal is brighter and punchier, also on THX and Cinema modes contrast has no affect at all other than a slight shift white, this is obviously the brightness cap I mentioned earlier, don't get me wrong both THX and Cinema are good & hide a lot of picture noise etc but both could do with a bit more punch IMO they both look like there is a slight mist or laquer over the screen which robs them of punch

I think I see what you mean , I tried the settings with my blu ray today and yes there is a noticeable shift up in brightness in Normal , but even more pronounced with Game and Photo ! Game looked very LCD like in some ways , very crisp and sharp .

Hi guys

Just picked up a P50G30 for work in the boardroom. 1st impressions overall i think its a very good tv.

1 little query i have, we have the twitter feed running at the moment on the screen and it looks good. After a couple of minutes a screensaver starts and it appears to be a screenshot of the twitter feed going round the screen over and over again. Couple of questions.

a. Could we create an image with the company logo on it and get it to play that instead.
b. Failing that, how do you turn it off!?

Cheers

Yeh Game has a wider colour gamut so it would look lcd like
Photo is similar to Cinema but has some weird artefacts and posterisation although it can go brighter than Cinema but I'm pretty sure that Normal/Game & Dynamic all can as well, as I understand it they all have slightly different gamma curves but they should all achieve the same light output
I'm sticking with Normal with contrast around 75%, brightness & colour at 50%, sharpness 2 clicks from off, everything else off apart from Clear Cinema
For me it gets me lcd type punch and brightness with all the plasma atributes of motion and black levels and a natural picture to boot
When I can watch an outside broadcast that looks to me like its real life then I know for me anyway the settings are good

I've just got my TX-P50G30B TV. Installed it. Updated to the latest firmware over ethernet. But I'm slightly disappointed by USB mediaplayer playback. 16:9 overscan doesn't appear to work movies are all letterboxed (or using an option scaled vertically so to be out of aspect ratio). Playback of 24p material is jerky and there appears to be no option to turn on 24p mode or turn off other features when using mediaplayer. Anyone any idea?

Most 1080p x264 encodes I've found just doesn't decode correctly. It skips video and audio frames. The video decoder just seems to be underpowered

There doesn't appear to be any way to select 4:3 aspect ratio in YouTube. Also many, many videos are missing from the "search". Basically any "official" music video is missing

I see many people talk about "THX" picture settings. Is that an option in an older firmware? I don't see it in any menus on the current.

If you're talking about downloaded movies or other highly compressed videos, it's my understanding that many of those videos use a high number of reference frames inbetween the transmission of a full frame. That shrinks the file size but increases decoder requirements. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't play on TVs.

I appreciate what you're saying but I tested the compressed videos with a professional tool and they are within the DivX and h264 specification. If the TV has certification they should have played back correctly. The SD files decode perfectly fine using an 12 year old Xbox-1 and XBMC

I'd like to think that the overscan/aspect ratio problem and jerkyness in 24 fps videos have options I've not yet found... anyone?

The iPhone / Android remote control apps are quite cool though. Stream videos, music and pictures from your phone wirelessly to your TV. Control the TV etc.

VIERA remote for Android

Anyone know if it is possible to select a HDMI port for video and the Audio input port for Audio? I'd like to use a DVI->HDMI adapter for my Mac and audio is on a separate cable.

The H.264/AVC specification has *tons* of parameters - I mean tons - which are up to the compressionist (or kid ripping BDs to put on Bittorrent, in many cases!) to set. It's still no guarantee that they'll play on every device.

David's right, the same files that do not play on the inbuilt player on mine play perfectly on the WDTV box I have, the best "tv" media players I have found are LG (but no dts support so you have to re-encode to DD) and Samsung

On the flip side I've got a couple of files that won't play on the WDTV and will play on the G30. Go figure. The only advantage of the WDTV that I can find is the ability to get to the advanced picture settings as its on an HDMi input.

I've currently attached the WDTV drives to a spare PC and am streaming the contents using Serviio. If it does find a file the TV doesn't like then it transcodes it.

You should be able to change the aspect on the remote ,at the top left .

THX is in the picture menu , you should see it , it does have a warm glow/tint, but still a pretty damn good picture , but you don't have to use it , Normal is pretty good with some tweaking .
