There is a right way to ask for things and there is a wrong way.
Having just read this thread from start to finish I have to agree. I can't see any reason why Matt took offence to genuinely offered advice and became so unnecessary in his responses. Given that he's been referred to the calibration forum to progress his enquiry I'd recommend the mods shut this one down.

No need to shut it down. No-one seriously stepped out of line. Give Matt a chance to respond to the discussion and recommendations. It will die a natural death.

Fatwaz: I have read the document and it is a great insight into what an be done with the right equipment. Did you buy an optical meter? If so what did you get and how much was it? Did it take much adjustment in the service menu?

Well, I'm happy to let this thread die and open a new one in the ISF calibrators section when I have time. It seems like that is a better place for this question.

I'm not really sure what I've said that was so offensive?

...The point of my thread was to obtain specific information about the panasonic service menu settings. Hopefully that will be more forthcoming in the ISF calibrators forum. I tried to state, politely initially, that I considered comments about warranties and warnings against attempting calibration to be off topic for this thread.

Several people have persisted in repeatedly making the same warnings. I personally find these comments rather patronising. I believe that fears about performing a calibration are fundamentally founded on a lack of knowledge. I already stated that I am aware of the risks, surely it is up to me if I want to calibrate my tv?

Sorry if my tone sometimes comes over as a bit blunt but I'm starting to feel as though I'm always under personal attack on this forum. All I want is a bit of technical information and discussion.

I have to agree with Matt - once it was established that he was aware of the risks, that should have been the end of it.

I also find it odd that members of a forum dedicated to AV enthusiasts aren't more encouraging when a fellow member decides to calibrate his TV himself. There are hundreds of posts on this forum about people going into the service menu to change various options on all sorts of TVs, and the warnings are rarely more than cursory.

Anyway, I calibrated my PS50B850 last night and the picture today is amazing - it wasn't hard, and was well worth doing judging by the results.

Matt,

The reason I initially entered this discussion was because of one specific phrase you used. "I have no worries about messing around in the service menu..."

That set all the alarm bells ringing as it suggested you didn't have the technical knowledge to use that menu. In later messages let's just say your tone (IMO) was not very friendly towards those trying to warn you off the service menu although that didn't bother me much.

What I did object to was your opinion of ISF Calibrators and the suggestion that they were BSing me in scaring me away from the service menu and into paying for their services.

And there would be absolutely no point in me giving you my settings as...

1) I have a different model..
2) Settings for each screen even for the same model are different..
3) I have different cables and source equipment which all have an effect on the picture.

Anyway, good luck to you and I hope you succeed in getting a better picture by whatever means you go about it.

If you're thinking of buying a meter, then the best value out there taking accuracy into account is this one:

CalMAN Enhanced Spyder 3 Colorimeter with CalMAN

You can buy i1 Display 2's, LT's and various other cheaper meters from various retailers, but the chances are they won't provide accurate results.

Calibrating the tv you have and the more advanced settings on the Panasonic is a whole different ball game.

Also did you use the hidden service menu?

What advice did you give Matt on his original question again let me think, Hummmm.?

Pleased you got your Sammy sorted though.

i used an eye one probe which i borrowed from a friend luckily and the free software used in the link.after that the only hard part is knowing which cut or drv to increase/decrease but as long as you make a note or better stilll take a photo of the values you can always go back to original settings if you muck up.took a couple of hours of trial and error but worth it in the end.
