Is it worth waiting for the Panasonic G15?

I am in the market for one of the new Panasonic Plasma screens.

I first was going to buy the S10, but then have changed my mind to the G10 due to the NEO-PDP. But I am a little worried with the thickness of the unit and heard the G15 may be slimmer, does anyone know if this will be the case?

Just dont want to spend a grand on a TV which I will keep for many years, only for the next few months lots of slim models to flood the market.

Shall I wait and pay the extra, or go now for the G10. I know the V10 is better still, but thats way over budget.

I personally don't believe its worth going for a G15 or V10 over a G10 for a few minor cosmetic changes, but at the end of the day we shall not know till these panels are released....

The G10 should be much better than the S10 though if its a reflection of last years 1080p screens.

Re: Is it worth waiting for the Panasonic G15?

The G15 has Viera cast, which is Panasonic's version of Samsung's internet widget capability.
The g15 is a bit more silvery but there is hardly any jump in between the g10 and g15. The big jump is really on G10 and V10

The Panasonic G15s offer the following advantages over the G10s:
  • Slim chassis design (2-inch);
  • Viera Cast which lets viewers access certain Internet content on the Panasonic Viera HDTV;
  • An extra HDMI input (four on G15 vs three on G10);
  • DLNA media streaming capabilities, allowing you to view photos, listen to music, and even playback DiVX videos from compatible networked devices; and
  • V-Audio Surround Pro (vs V-Audio Surround on G10)

Somebody said in the page that:

"John W on 24 April 2009 5:34 pm The reason to get the G15 is 24p/96 mode where it will play movies at 24p on a 96fps stream and eliminate flicker and judder all together. Viera cast looks like sweetness too. I just saw a G10 in store and that is ABSOLUTELY SOMETHING SPECIAL. Forget the extra 2 lux darkness on teh Pioneer, the motion clarity of the G10 makes everything look real. The right material looks 3d honestly, a very very impressive panel. Motion wins over black in this case when black is back"

I am thinking in between Pan. 46' G15 and Sony 52' W5500... or maybe Samsung 55"B650... but havent decided yet...

Re: Is it worth waiting for the Panasonic G15?

But then if you're forking out for the G15 why not the V10 which is slimmer still?

Pre-oder prices are only another £200-250 over the best current G10 prices.

Re: Is it worth waiting for the Panasonic G15?

I asked myself the same question and I decided its not worth it (For me that is, it might be for you ), not if you plan to go with the G10 anyway.

The Viera Cast could be really cool but I dont think I would use it very often anyway, and if it turns out to be great then I will just get a Panasonic Blu-ray player which is cheaper than the price difference between the G10 and G15 in my country.

Besides I dont want to wait 2 more months.
Unless there was some great improvements in PQ then I would probably consider it.
As well as going for the V10 if it would be produced in a 46" model, because 50" is just too big for my room.

Oh well, makes the choice alot easier

Edit, the 24p/96hz thing sounds good though, but isnt that the same thing the UK type G10s already can do?

Both the G15 and V10 are 2" thick. The Z1 is slimmer (1").

All the 2009 Pannys play 24p at 96Hz.

no news on sockets, etc?...
I suppose it will be released somewhere in June, July...

Any news on pricing for the v10 and Z1?
Heard the Z1 would be around £4000 somewhere

They will be RRP at £1800 (50") and £4200 (54") respectively. But I think on play.com the V10 is available for £1600

Re: Is it worth waiting for the Panasonic G15?

I was going to hold out for the G15 due to people saying it was slimmer.

After looking on Pannys website (All info for new teles there now) I found out the depth of the G10 is 106mm and the G15 97mm.

For 9mm I aint going to bother. The other features would be nice, but for £200 so quid and a wait until end of June, aint worth it.

G10 42 inch getting ordered very soon. Plus get it in May and will get 5 year guarantee. :->

Yeah, just Viera cast and Silver pedestal? I would pay £75-£100 extra for that. But £200?

Also does Viera cast need direct ethernet connection or a wireless dongle?

The 42" G15 is £200 more than the G10, however at 46" there is only a £100 increase. For the extra, the only real benefits are the extra HDMI connection on the G15 and also its ability to play music/pictures/video over a network. The G15 also supports DivX over a network and via the SD card slot.

I believe the G15 bezel is only 2" deep (G10 is 4"). G15 is deeper at the back where all the connections are.

G15 also has Vsound ProSurround and Deep Colour.

Wasn't trying to offer a comprehensive spec comparison, just mentioning the useful benefits over the G10. Deep colour is known to be a 'marketing spec' i.e. the technology allows for something that the human eye cannot perceive and in my opinion, I've yet to come across any useful 'surround' effects on any stereo tv. I seem to remember David (who reviewed the V10) stating that this ProSurround effect was just another one to add to the list of unsuccessful systems.

Re: Is it worth waiting for the Panasonic G15?

From the panny website asside from the Vierra Cast features the G15 is a little thiiner as said and offers Deep Colour. The Bezel is the excatly the same on the G10 and G15. How much improvement would deep colour make?

None at all, unless you have a Deep Colour source, eg Panasonic HD camcorder. BluRays dont support Deep Colour, neither does HD Broadcasts (SKY, Freesat..)

Re: Is it worth waiting for the Panasonic G15?

I have changed my mind again (This TV lark is difficult, but fun)

I may now downgrade and go for the S10, spending the extra cash on a nice Panny home cinema system the 860.

Anyone expereience the difference between the G10 and S10? I know the NeoPDP and Freesat, but I will get sky HD so will not use freesat and without a recorder, whats the point.

Will I notice a difference with using Sky HD and PS3?

Re: Is it worth waiting for the Panasonic G15?

Could you still watch viera cast if you had one of the new blu ray players but the tv didnt have viera cast like the G10 ?

Wasnt sure if the TV and the blu ray player would need this.

Would the ethernet cable go from the tv to the blu ray player ?

Just wondering what the set up is

Cheers

If the new BluRay player has Viera cast, then that box will connected to the network (ethernet). The TV will be connected to Bluray as normal with HDMI and will be display the Viera Cast from the BluRay.

would you still need the ethernet cable going from player to the tv or just the
HDMI connection between TV and Player.

Cheers mate

I debated this too (between the X10, S10, G10) and went for the 50" G10.

Id like to hear any recommendations for a new home cinema system capable of playing all the new HD audio formats though - preferably Panasonic to match the TV. I did read about one the other day which sounded good, I think its about £500-£600?

I know a thinner bezel (G15 and V10) is better but lets be honest...how many times are you going to be looking at the side of the TV rather than actually watching your TV?

G15 isnt worth the extra money in my opinion (unless the difference is below £100). Vcast doesnt interest me in the slightest (neither does BD-live which I dont bother with). V10 was a bit beyond what I wanted to spend. No doubt the V10 owners will all start pining for the Z1 soon (I will too!)

Re: Is it worth waiting for the Panasonic G15?

I ended up getting the G10 too, but in 42" (wish I had gone for the 46" now).

Its brillant and will be feeding an extra cable from my dish for the freesat this weekend. Cant afford Sky HD at this present time.

Really impressed with Sd and HD on freesat, but I have seen Sky and looks even better. Ps3 looks amazing, cant wait for FN4.

Also looking for Home cinema, but around £200-£300. Ideally with tall boy speakers and panasonic, if the speakers were a little thinner. Cant find any with 2 x optical input, but can always get a splitter. People suggest separet amp, but works out so much dearer.

G10 is a must, I am so happy with it. Just get as big as you can fit and afford.
