Mine is at -3 for live action and for animation i put it down more to -10.
"crushed" blacks and whites

Yes contrast was 32 & brightness was +1 .. IIRC
I now have mine at contrast 32 & brightness -3 or -2 (personal preference and just seems a lot blacker and more atmospheric)

I tried turning down the brightness level a couple of notches to decrease black level but could definitely see a loss of shadow detail when doing so (I found black hair is a good thing to look at whilst tweaking) . The DVE disc actually demonstrated that 0 was a touch low and +1 a touch high. If only I could get +0.5 I'm sure a ISF calibration will sort that later

I found there is no difference in idle luminance when you go below 0. Dropping any lower than that doesn't increase black level it just reduces shadow detail. I must admit though that +1 as Steve advises i think seems to increase noise in darker areas. I guess im saying that 0 is a happy medium.

Re: Pioneer 9G Owners Thread
Just a quick mention to all the guys asking what the better settings are and so on. We should be releasing around 6 tutorial videos in the very near future where some of the best ISF/display experts in the country will take you through exactly how to set up the main controls correctly and what to look for. Once set, along with your sources (a very important part that people forget!) you should never have to change the actual settings depending on material. There is also a video which explains exactly what happens when you hire an ISF professional as well, everything covered so you know what you are paying for etc.
I hope these will be popular, the presenters will be Neil Davidson, Graham Goodbun and Steve Kemp (bumtious), first one should be published in a week or so.
(oh and we use a 6090 for all the tutorial video stuff, which could just be an added bonus?)

Re: Pioneer 9G Owners Thread
I brought a 5090 the other day, wow! What a TV. The picture quality is superb. Im using Bumtious's starter settings which looks sublime.
Quick question regarding settings. I use a PS3 for Blu ray and DVD. What Drive mode and film mode should I use for the PS3 input? Same also for watching Digital TV using the Pioneer tuner - what drive mode and film setting? Thanks

Hi inferno_red.
DVD via the PS3 you might as well send 1080p Purecinema will be irrelevant with this setting but leave on Advance for Blu-ray PS3 > 1080p/24 to AUTO.
Leave in Drive mode 1.
Freeview >Drive 2 and Purecinema to OFF.
All the best.
