Component & SCART Leads: QED, Ixos, neither?

[FONT=Microsoft Sans Serif]With the Pio nearly on its way i was looking for some good cables

I found one ebay shop that does 1M QED
QED QUNEX P-CV1 COMPONENT 3 RCA for £33.99 delivered.
They also do Ixos which look to be good and was wondering if there was an accepted brand leader for both SCART and Component leads?

Also, am I right in thinking that if I don't need the length I am better off using shorter cables? Or is the quality such that there is no degradation over 2 or even 3 meters?

The Pio media box will be in with the standalone components, DVD, Digibox etc so 1M is more than adequate but if there was no degradation, I could go the extra £12 and get a 2M just in case I had to move the DVD player from one side to the other for some reason.

I like the idea of flat scart leads as the standard ones with the cable off to one side can on occasion get bumped and wrench it to one side, are these as good or even better than rounded cables?

Damon,

Costco Wholesale sell a twin pack QED set of fully wired gold plated scarts for only £25 - that's excellent value IMO. Bought them and I am really impressed - so much better than the (disposable) black ones I used to have.

I have a 5m QED Qunex PCV1 component cable going from my Sony DVP NS955 to my Panny 37PV500 plasma and the pictures are great. Its a weighty, sturdy cable with decent plugs. Its also won loads of awards in the mags.

If you want a component cable you could do a lot worse than hopping over to the Powerbuys forum and buying one of Mark Grant's cables - they're broadcast grade.

I remain to be convinced that there is much benefit to spending large amounts of money on video cables if you're not passing a high definition signal through them. Something like a Philex Thor SCART cable (£18) is noticeably better than an absolute bog-standard SCART (not because it's gold-plated, but because each of the internal wires is indvidually screened rather than just a single layer of screening round the cable). But beyond that, while there are differences, they're often barely detectable.

Ixos, QED and Belkin are usually quite well spoken of. Supra is good, but overpriced.

Original poster: it's a good idea to keep cables as short as possible, yes.

I got a Supra FS scart for only £30, no more expensive than those from QED or Ixos.

Ended up getting a QED SQART P2110 (flat blue one) 1M for £25 inc postage.
Lost the auction for the QED Component leads but will try again or get the 1M ones for £33.99 inc postage "buy it now"; much better than the prices I have seen in online shops of £40 or more

I now have a 9 day wait for the Pio to turn up but at least i can play with my cable...so to speak and decide how I am going to position everything in the rack.

I am sticking to 1M or less. 0.5M is probably a bit small but the 0.75M could be a go.

I can't find the powerbuys forum with the cables by the way but I didn't look for long....ahh found it

I am using one of my old scarts for Sky to TV. It is a blue JVC lead and feels quite heavy. Is this any good or would I benefit from an upgrade?

One of my generic SCART leads is very thick compared to the other throw-away ones I have but without knowing what it is made of it is hard to say if it is of any great quality.

If i used cheap leads with mine it would nag at me I have accepted that I am going to spend an additional £60 for a good quality SCART lead and a Good quality set of Component leads.

Richer sounds do a try before you buy thing with interconnects don't they? Try and borrow some good quality ones for a comparison with your JVC one. Just recalled I have a 5MTR Cambridge audio gold plated SCART in the cupboard somewhere, I wonder if that is up to it or is it too long? it was only £30 for 5M so I suspect that it isn't the best one they do
