UK Calibration DVD/blu-ray Disc recomendations for setting up TVs

Hi, great to find this foum, seems exacly what I need.

Anyway I have been looking into how to calibrate monitors for video as I am starting to investigate colour grading/correction as I am a video editor. I therefore need everything set correctly, including brigtness and contrast. A few people have mentioned Blu-Ray and DVD calibration discs. The two mentioned are the THX Calibration Disc and Disney's WOW:World of Wonder disc. I found a very positive revew at Disney's WOW: World of Wonder (Blu-ray) Official AVSForum Review but dont seem to get a regon 2 (UK) version.

So my question is are there any UK discs llike this and also how good are they. On another nore general note any advice on setting up both IPS LCD and Plasma panels would be great.

Ben

There is the DVE HD Basics Bluray disc. Loaded with plenty of test patterns. Be careful as some retailers are selling the USA locked disc. Always best to check first.

The AVS709 disc (google this one). You need to follow the instructions and burn the disc yourself. Its free and has some decent test patterns for setting contrast, brightness, sharpness and colour.

Spears & Munsil bluray disc. Ive not personally used this yet but its suppose to be the very best calibration disc.

Hi Ben,

I edit videos and both my monitors are calibrated. I use CalPC rather than discs or my pattern generator as it has a few features I like such as the test patterns for contrast and brightness which can be assigned to each monitor in turn, plus the greyscale correction is automatic via the wizard. You can dial in the error level you want to go to, i.e. dE 1 and it auto calibrates until you reach that level. (I use two Dell U2410 monitors which allow the software to access the LUTs and change these to calibrated settings). I would recommend this approach to anybody who does colour sensitive work as it is very accurate from my experience. Remember that Greyscale is a must to get right and that almost all PC monitors have no CMS so make sure you select the closest the monitor will get to Rec.709, usually the sRGB option (but not always, so measuring is best).

I use mac so CalPC is not an option. Also I am connecting the monitor to the Mac using a Blackmagic Intensity Pro Capture card so think I need to use the video files. I think the AVS HD 709 calibration patterns are what I should use to calibrate a monitor connected to a Blackmagic Intensity Pro via HDMI. I have managed to import the .mp4 files using the Blackmagic Media Express OK but for some reason it will not play them. No error but when I double click on file it does not play.

Can anybody recommend a video player I could use or tell me how I can play the files through Media Express?

Regards,
Ben

You might want to start a thread in the Mac forum to get the most Mac-informed eyes reading it.
