Sony Bravia only has Vivid, Normal and Custom picture modes - help

Having received the email, I watched the video and it displayed the differences very well. So have come home to have a fiddle....

TV is set to Vivid but only has normal or Custom as an alternative. OK it's about 5 years old .... a Sony KDL32S2010. Is it just a case of using the Custom settings and then playing with the brightness/contrast etc settings?

One thing I have noticed is that when on "Vivid" the scrolling text on say Sky news is fine, but on "Normal" the text blurs and skips.

Having looked at the manual, you are right that there is no cinema mode. However, if you set it to custom and select the colour temperature warm2 that should get you a more accurate image (it is impossible to be certain of this without the TV in front of me). Make sure that when in custom mode you switch off all the unnecessary controls such as Vivid colour, Clear White, Contrast Enhancer and so on. This gives you a starting point so you can switch these on and off to check what they do. I would suggest from experience that these items will probably be detrimental to the image quality, but again we can't test that for you given the age of the set.
It is a 7 year old TV so information is not that clear, but let us know if that improves things. http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/2684953111.pdf is the link to your manual for further reading.

Yes, I think your best bet with that model is to select the CUSTOM picture mode and in the Picture Menu (use MENU Button on Remote Control to access> Scroll down to Settings>Select Picture) scroll down to Colour Temperature and change to Warm 2. That should get you the closest to accurate picture for this TV.

EDIT: Beaten to it!

Thanks for the two replies.
Just had a play as suggested and like the results so far.
It'll be interesting to see some wildlife documentaries and maybe a bit of F1 action too.
Cheers guys

Thanks Phil and Mark. What's for certain derdle is that your TV will look more natural in Standard mode than Vivid mode. If you like the results in teh end, please hit the Facebook Like, Tweet and Google + 1 buttons on the Step 1 page to spread the word.
Thanks

Do you have the model no?

Does it have a THEATRE Button on the remote control?

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the quick response. The remote I have doesn't have a "THEATRE" button, unless it has a symbol rather than the word theatre?

The remote is silver, has a reference RM-ED005

Here is the remote.
I have merged two threads about Sony Bravias as both have the same question.

Thanks! So in a nutshell, it's an old TV. Time to buy a new one!

Being old is not a good enough excuse for me to replace a TV. I wouldn't replace a TV unless it was faulty in some way, or it lacked features I wanted.
But then if a TV can no longer produce a good enough picture, I would consider it broken.
I wouldn't therefore suggest you replace the TV unless you can't get a good picture out of it.
Don't ask me what you consider to be a good picture, because I don't know

Hi Rich

Sorry, I meant the model number of the TV but I'll copy and paste in the advice from another thread as it's likely to apply to your TV:

Select the CUSTOM picture mode and in the Picture Menu (use MENU Button on Remote Control to access> Scroll down to Settings>Select Picture) scroll down to Colour Temperature and change to Warm 2. That should get you the closest to accurate picture for this TV.

Cheers

Mark

Thanks to you both for the advice. My Bravia is around 7 years old and the route suggested is available.

I always notice my friends newer TV's always have a crisper, sharper image, especially on Xbox gaming. But then I don't have the option of setting them up side by side. So who knows, the human eye is a poo judge!

I don't want to fork out for a new TV if I can set this one up sufficiently.

Any Sony TV in my experience has the opportunity (as spelt out above) to set preferences for Contrast,Brightness,back-light,colour etc when in CUSTOM mode. You can usually change at least some of these in other modes. When it comes to the crunch however much you copy other peoples settings at the end of the day it is your particular preference that matters to you.

Yesterday a close relative was showing off his new TV to me,a top-end Panasonic plasma. He had obviously no idea how to set it up. We watched poor quality SD transmissions from Sky and You Tube clips. Frankly, it looked terrible. The point is he felt it was a terrific picture. Far be from me to offer any advice. It was like watching someone demonstrate a Ferrari while driving it round the garden!
