Farnborough 2012

I heard a racket outside, grabbed the camera, quickly shoved on the 300mm f/4 plus Kenko 1.4 TC and rushed out. Seems that preparations for Farnborough 2012 have started. The light was poor and the sky overcast, so not ideal.

1. I know there is not much prop blur on this but I was in a hurry.

2. I first thought this was the Dutch F16 but on closer inspection it seems to be a F17 Thunder. Pakistani maybe? Edit: Now ID'd as a Korean Black Eagles T50.

3. He came right overhead on his landing approach.

Great shots - but I've gotta say that I think the Advertising Logo really spoils them for me - hence #3 is my favourite....

Thanks Jim.

The Breitling team is apparently the only privately owned jet display team in the world (based in France).
They probably need the sponsorship, hence the advertising

I fully appreciate that Mike - and to a great extent it's not even the commercialism that's a problem for me it's all about the Aesthetics - there's no visual appeal to it or graphical elements to soften the Logo at all it's simply (IMO) a "Pig Ugly" Font with no appeal whatsoever in a not very attractive colour either - it might look "O.K." on an overpriced watch but on these beautiful machines it just looks plain "wrong" to me - I've seen better photoshopped on "watermarks" <rant mode off>

The Vulcan paid a quick visit to Farnborough this morning, he did a few touch and gos, then probably went on to RIAT.

Lovely photo! When they used to hold Biggin Hill Air show, the Vulcan holding area was over my house: the original sub-woofer!

Over my house today. Not the same quality as above as I don't have my 70-300mm anymore so I had to crop in some but in others I just let the different exposures do their stuff with no crop. Its such a great looking aircraft silhouetted against the sky any. Hope "you" don't mind as there are a few of them......

At one point four other propeller...training aircraft I think.... buzzed the Vulcan and followed it for quite a while. great to watch

I particularly like 3, 5 and 6 Gazza - looks like you really need to buy a nice Minolta Tele-zoom - one going cheap on the Classifieds at the moment

Might be interested but not sure what people mean by "fast". Is that speed to lock on focus ? As my Sigma 70-300 was the same f rating and I never had a problem with that

Well I this case I think he means perhaps the speed to get initial focus and possibly how quickly it adjusts focus afterwards if tracking something ? - but of course we don't know what sort of shooting he wants a tele-zoom for...

I'd expect the Minolta to be very similar in that AF speed side of things as your Siggie was as both are screw drive AF and not SSM/SAM

Having just sold my 70-300 as I wasn't using it its kind of frustrating to not have it on the odd day. But I knew that when I sold it. I'll have a think about it as I'm not sure how it would have coped with the Vulcan today even though it was moving relatively slowly.....so to speak. Not whizzing by like a bird of prey or similar

FWIW - I used the Minolta in question for my first ever BIF/BOP shots from Austria last year and some turned out o.k. - considering I rather stupidly left the camera on "indoor low light settings" as we were rushing to catch the display and needed a lot of PP on the RAW's

Where do you live topgazza?

I missed the Vulcan today, as well as the Lancaster. Light was bad, so not too upset.

I did manage to get the 787 Dreamliner earlier. Came right over the house on his landing approach.

Its a cracker....and interesting settings as well. +5 exp comp...stops the whole thing underexposing because of the sky ?

It's actually +5/3 or +1.7 EV that I have dialled in, but yes, the aim is to overexpose the background sky to avoid the black silhouette effect on the aircraft.

I also set auto ISO with a threshold of 1/800s (on a 300mm +1.4TC = 420mm lens) to a maximum of ISO800 for jets. This means my s/speed never drops below 1/800s. Using aperture priority I can get maximum shutter speed with the lowest ISO for the available light.

I just have to remember to switch off auto ISO when I drop the s/speed for props else all my shots are ISO800.

Just playing and I have to set ISO at 800 as the A580 doesn't have an auto with max setting...my X10 does....but not the A580. But thats OK..I can always go 400 to be safe

I think that if you just set the A580 to Auto ISO it maxes at 1600 ISO anyway

That's true and I'll still get decent high shutter speeds.
