Playing with B&W processing

Been trying out various methods of getting black and white out. Bit hit and miss (more miss than hit), but it's all part of the fun i guess.

Here's a couple of attempts.

Both shots taken at a friends house with just the house lighting on. Not posed.

I much prefer the second. The harsher brightness of the the first is not something I like that much and whereas I can see it working on the face, the teeth look way to far OTT.

Thanks John

The good old "Osmond" smile I had to clone out a brace, and that was a real pain. Too much whitening.

Hi Paulie - I agree with John here. And the second shot just about works for me but is still a little "blown out" looking in places - at least on my laptop display.

You might be interested in having a look at this months "Digital Photo" magazine as it's got a feature article and technique pullout section on Mono Conversion techniques as as well as a CD with Photoshop/Elements tutorials on the subject.

Thanks Jim

I'll take a look. The second one is a combination of three images of varying tones (high key and down), due to the arms being totally blown in high key only. Just overlaying layers from the other two versiond ended up with this.

Thanks Paulie - kind of like HDR then ? - did you auto bracket the exposure to get the three or did you adjust a single in PP ?

Just used the origonal colour nef to jpeg, then three different types of mono conversion. faded layers, then overlayed them. Rather fun, but bloody time consuming. The other bunch are all on flickr at the moment.
