Christchurch Pier Fireworks

I'm a bit ahead (time wise) to you lot so these were take last night from my deck across to New Brighton Pier, 20min display, taken at ~180-200mm, 350D, f8, ISO 100, bulb + cable release.

I've stuffed the last 2 years shots up so was nice to get some good uns.

Re: Christchurch Pier Fireworks

Fantastic photos there. I can't believe I didn't take my camera, I wasn't expecting such an excellent display. I'll definitely try and get some shots of my own next year.

Re: Christchurch Pier Fireworks

I live just outside Christchurch (UK).
Saw the title and thought to myself .. "when did they build a pier and how come nothing was in the local paper".

Nice photos.

Re: Christchurch Pier Fireworks

Highly impressive.. How did you decide when you had exposed enough ( using bulb) was it a bit of trial and error?

Re: Christchurch Pier Fireworks

Well you want the shutter open for however long you want to record the changing image, but your constrained by either getting enoigh action/light ( short shutter time) or way too much and blowing out or smearing (too long).

Realy depends on the fireworks, slow/small/not so birght = longer shutter speed / reverse etc.

aaaahh, very scientific....now I understand

... it really WAS trial and error then?? I thought it would be the square root of the focal length multiplied by the time in 1/1000ths over the lumens of the light divided by the weight of the gunpowder.... or something like that...(joking of course)
