Love the first two Neil - can't quite choose between them and would have liked the Heron shot but the DOF/OOF Background makes the in focus bird a bit "pop-up cartooney" to me.

Re: Oyster's, Boats,Heron and £Million Houses

The "Flight of the heron" is a great shot, well done.

The 'million pound houses' don't look more than £200k worth, breezeblock sides and prob 3 bedrooms max with 2 rooms downstairs, this type of 'kit' house is assembled in a week...........
must be location...............
but what do I know

Having looked again at the horizons cant see a great deal wrong with them they are not out by much apart from the house shot and there again you cant see the horizon in that one, personally cant understand why folk make such a big deal about it.

Neil you just have to say that you are employing the Dutch Tilt technique to add dramatic effect

Whos getting upset

I have never said they are level

Buildings maybe built level but I'm afraid beaches aren't

Dont know how you determine not level but the second shot is bang on according to the soft wear I have, look at the buildings roof in that shot the parallel lines of my software run along it, bang on

The boats are tilted cause the tide out

Re: Oyster's, Boats,Heron and £Million Houses

no2 is tilted along the building roof, can fix it in 2s in lightroom

Did you boost contrast/saturation any? that might give them more pop

Thanks All

Obvious I'm wrong about my levels but all along I've said that a big deal is always made of it when slightly out and if I'm honest I'm not that one way or another.

Off to Specsavers

Thanks Springers

Thats very kind of you and its always nice to hear from you, its coming up to a year later on this month since I got my Dslr and to be honest I have exceeded my expectations in my progress and I have loved every minute of it, the high and the lows.

A year ago I was happy to click away in Auto and in jpeg, now its all the manual modes and RAW only and tonight I'm having a go at water drops into liquid. What I do need to do is get more understanding of the softwear side of it, I have Elements 7 but dont use it as I find it a bit daunting, but if I could get to grips with it maybe then my "Horizons" would be straight

Thanks again for you kind words and yes Molly came back to me she has got to many home comforts not to

Neil why don't you download Picasa? Its free and though very basic it should help you straighten those horizons. I am more into taking the photos than manipulating them and Picasa has worked just fine for what i need, other software packages are more comprehensive but Picasa has all that I need and will suit a beginner more than elements etc.......

Glad that Molly retuned eventually!

I have Picasa and that was the one I used at first but I find when I use it and upload to flickr the shots look a bit soft so I stopped using it, I now use the software that came with the camera(canon)and by all accounts its pretty good but unfortunately it does not have a horizon straightener.

I do post processing, ie.sharpen, saturation, contrast and the likes but I think there is a lot more out there that I can do only if I could get my head around the more comprehensive softwear, so its a case of just plugging along and picking up things as I go along.

PS. tried the water drops into the liquid... failed miserably

Hello there

Agree you have come a long way Tonkie

Nice capture of the heron, but I would like that one.

The one I think has a bit of potential is #2.Lean 2, think this may work in B&W and try and bring back that sky.

Did you shoot these in Raw if so you may be able to rescue the sky.

As for software and always find a video handy, all of a sudden you realise how easy it is to use.

Here a link to some video tutorial on you tube.

Hope these help.

Cheers Holo

I did shot in RAW but I only keep the RAW files of daughter or family as I think the rest are not that important but I do keep the rest in JPEG, thanks for the link I will have a look at some but not all as there are 69,100 of them and dont think I will have time to view all

PS.To all who has contributed to this thread I hope you have not got the wrong message from me, I am more than grateful for all the help that I have received from AV and I dont think I would be where I am today photographic wise if not for you out there,I suppose that what makes the AV so special

Re: Oyster's, Boats,Heron and £Million Houses

tonkie, if it's any consolation most shots I put on flickr, here and other forums are commented on with stuff like "the horizon's not straight" "there's a branch coming out of her head" or "you've chopped (insert some body part here) off".

We're amateurs after all and I'd rather concentrate on getting the shot than making my camera as level as humanly possible. And for the record, you have come a long way.
