England rugby training camp

As the buildup to the autumn rugby internationals increases, some shots for you from the media day today at the England rugby training camp in Bagshot. Not as many photographers there as I thought there would be. Here's a quick sample for you:

#1 Just for fun, taken with a borrowed 15mm fisheye which is such a cool lens - must get one....

#2 New boy Ayoola Erinle is on the bench for Saturday. Looked pretty good I have to say.

#3 Borthwick telling his team what they've got to do.

#4 Andy Goode. The light was very nice as you can see, with lovely backlit trees over on the far side. Unfortunately, all the players stayed on the near side apart from Goode who was doing some kicking practice. I do like the circular highlights in the background and the bits of grass that have come off his boot.

#5 All lenses were inevitably on Johnny Wilkinson. This is pretty much the picture I was after - a happy smiling Wilkinson chatting confidently to a team-mate.

Gear for today was 2x 1DIII bodies, a 300 2.8 occasionally with a 1.4x extender (love the versatility of this setup), a 70-200 2.8 and a 15mm fisheye. I uploaded into Lightroom when I got back, captioned & keyworded, and picked 5 of the best to send off to the papers. Meanwhile I'm keeping an eye on Getty to see what their photographer got.

Re: England rugby training camp

An interesting read Tobers thanks... Wow the camera lenses those guys are using couldn't get much longer without starting to bend in the middle Are you working for the tabloids then or do you freelance and is this your niche or do you photograph everything from sports to movie celebs or even nasty, lying politicians etc
I'm really curious as to how you guys make a living in what must be a dog eat dog market??

Just freelancing. I've got a "real" job as well - sports photography doesn't pay enough unfortunately.

Aaaah, I guessed as much. I am impressed with the stuff you are able to capture. Are you tasked by a particular tabloid to photograph such events then or do you simply hope that yours stands out from the crowd when you send your work in? I am only asking as I love to shoot street photography and was wondering what the best way was to approach my local town/county papers with interesting shots... walk in to their offices with a portfolio, just send small watermarked samples by email and hope someone may notice or try and get a foot in the door some other way?
This is a hobby for me but I am keen and if it helps me pay for my kit/web hosting site then all the better

Re: England rugby training camp

Nice and sharp again.

I'm getting worried about myself, I'm commenting as if I know what I'm taking about
