Weird issue with gpu temp?!

Ok this has me completely confused.

My graphics card used to idle at about 33c which is absolutely fine.

I was stress testing my cpu overclock for 24 hours and obviously the case temps went up as high as they were ever going to go. Even then the card idled at about 40c

Today though my gpu is idling at 52c, the ambient is not higher than it's been.

I thought maybe it might be a faulty reading, re-installed software and it's still showing that high.

The fan is set to auto as it always has been and is spinning at the same speed it used to when idling at 33c

Any ideas what it could be?

Was the system shut down over night? Have you booted from cold and that has been the idle temp after how long?

Yeah it was shut down.

It pretty much got to that temp straight away, it's bugging the hell out of me.

Installed anything since that might be doing things in the background etc?

Malwarebytes is the only thing I've installed

just out of curiosity, check the other fans running in the chassis, see if one has stopped in-taking or exhausting

Yeah I checked all fans, every single one is running and the rpms are all what they should be.

For a temp to go up something has to have changed, but nothing has

Also all other temps are the same as they always are, e.g cpu, nb, sb hard drives etc.

erm, check the gpu clocks, see if there in IDLE mode or Blu-Ray mode, or Gaming mode

Gpu clocks are as they should be, they downclock when idle on the desktop and only increase when running a game.

I can not for the life of me see anything that has changed.

Voltage is stock too.

I'll try running a game later to see if the load temps are sky high too.

happpzzz 17-02-2012 1:58 PM

yeah see how that goes, and we'll go from there

AVF Jay 17-02-2012 3:56 PM

Ok 100c on load

happpzzz 17-02-2012 3:58 PM

manually kick up the fan speed to 100%

check temps, but i got a feeling you may need to pull ya gfx card out and give it a check up

I would check for dust in the card it can be a major factor in temps, my 5970 was hitting 86c under load, after opening the card and cleaning out the dust it now hits 62-63c under load, and have you tried removing the card and putting it back in ?

He's got a new card, I doubt its dust build up, unless he's using his PC as a hoover.

On my old rig, I used to take the side off and stick a 14" desk fan beside it... For cooling, it really worked, and it blew a lot of existing dust-bunnies out...

But after a while, my components became clogged with dust!

I had to take my cooler off and blow the dust out of the grooves! :(
