Those rings on the sign (2nd image) are looking very 2D sir.

You require the Static Mesh Improvement Mod to sort those out!

When learning skills from a trainer can i only learn 5 from one skill per level.

For example I buy the 5 levels of Archery and i cant do anymore until the next level. But could I also buy 5 levels of one hand in the same level? Been a while and dont want to waste levelling up lol.

No it's five levels across everything, so you could only do, for example, three archery and two one-handed. It can become a real grind once you hit the higher levels being forced to use skills you've ignored if you want to keep levelling up.

A particularly amusing Mod round-up this week from Gamespot:

Bethesda Softworks has announced via Twitter that Dawnguard, a DLC (downloadable content) for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, will be launched on Tuesday, June 26
Does anyone know what the content actually is. Actual side story or just some weapons and such?.

That was the worst one. The rest of the New Vegas DLCs were great.

So in Fallout 3 terms it's not as bad as Mothership Zeta, but not as good as Point Lookout

I'm sure someone somewhere is working on a hefty add-on like The Lost Spires in Oblivion, complete with dodgy voice acting I sincerely hope.

My copy of Skyrim was dispatched from Amazon today!!! I'm wondering though, should I play the game without mods for a while first, and then introduce them, or should I just put them on at the beginning (graphics mods that is)? And also, does anyone have a list of recommended mods that people just can't live without? Thanks!!!

EDIT: I just saw the link to Theydon's mods on the previous page!!! I noticed that Skyrim HD isn't on there, is that not as good as it was?!

@DarrellW94, you probably need to read the last few pages, also the last pages of the previous thread, this came up relatively recently.

Before you start, it's worth googling the nVidia Skyrim guide to settings, it's useful to read no matter what your GPU.

Certainly, I'd stick SkyUI on there immediately, also the official HD DLC texture packs, and run with those for a while. Deadly Dragons etc when you've reached a certain point in the plot.

Hold off on the Unofficial Skyrim patch, it's slightly knackered at the moment but will be updated soon when Bethesda update the Creation Kit.

HD is an essential mod - I should have made clearer that that list is only the mods I am using through steam workshop - a lot of the texture mods don't have workshop equivalents do I have mods through nexus mod manager on top of that.

One more thing...

And while I'm logged in, you might want to dig up the "Modding" thread on here, it has a step-by-step guide on how to install mods from the Skyrim Nexus site using the Nexus Mod Manager. I know you have a choice nowadays with the Steam Workshop but IMHO the NMM approach is preferable.

Enjoy!

It really is a good game, but... The performance is driving me mad!!!

I'm wondering if anyone can help me with this...

When I start up Skyrim, gameplay is smooth as butter, but over time, it starts to stutter, up to a point where it is pretty much unplayable!!! Because of the nature of it, I'm guessing that it is something to do with memory not being flushed correctly? I've tried a few fixes: windowed mode, ENB Series anti-freeze patch and fiddling around with the .ini files. But none of these seem to fix it!!! Can anyone offer me any help at all? Please ask if I haven't given enough information!!!

Could you list your PC specs? Also what settings you're playing at? And what version of tesv.exe?

I'd try:

- regenerating your .ini files (rename them then restart the game)
- disabling all your mods (easy to do if you used NMM)
- try a brand new game after having done the above (in case your save game is corrupted)

I run with a lowly core i3 (LGA 1156), GTX460 1Gb and 8Gb RAM (Win 7 64 bit) and I'm all good apart from Markarth or "that" view in Whiterun, FPS dives to 30 from a stable 50 (locked).

I'm running on an Intel i5 2320, Radeon HD 6870, and 4gb RAM. I don't have an SSD, which I guess could explain the stuttering as new cells are loaded? I'm running the latest version of the game, I've just set Steam to automatically update it.

By looking at your specs, in theory I should be able to run it a lot better than I do!!! I do have quite a few mods running, and it took me a while to come to a good set, so maybe a fresh install of the game might help out with any conflicts. Thanks for the advice, I'll try your ideas out!!!

No problem! I don't have an SSD either, upped from 4Gb to 8Gb as memory was silly prices (but I'm not sure if that makes any difference, I haven't done much benchmarking).

I run a whole bunch of mods, including the official HD texture pack and the Skyrim HD 1.5 "lite" set. Everything's set to ultra apart from shadows which are medium or low, but I'm also using triple buffering and "performance" AO via the nVidia control panel. Maybe I just don't play long enough to see any problems? Two or three hours is usually my limit, I have kids.

Maybe I should try the lite version of Skyrim HD, I have heard it's a bit of a hog!!! I might try and see if I can force triple buffering through CCC, that might make a good difference. The stuttering normally only occurs after about half an hour's gameplay!!! Thanks for the help again!!

I've only ever played oblivion for about 30 mins. Would this be a good game for someone without much experience in rpgs?

Naa if Oblivion didn't hold your interest for more than 30 minutes, there's nothing in Skyrim that would change that.

Sorry should of mentioned at the time I didn't really have chance to play it properly but did like what I played. I'll give it a whirl if I can pick it up cheap.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with that statement!!! Skyrim is holding my interest a lot more than other RPGs, including Oblivion. I don't know why, but there's something really special about it that makes you just want to keep on playing!!! I think the fact that it was mainly aimed at console players, they made it a more... User-friendly experience? I really can't explain why, but it's just such an engaging game!!!

I've found the opposite really. I've spent hundreds of hours on Oblivion, and I've struggled to go back to Skyrim since Christmas.

Maybe for the reasons you said but for me it's not as deep so hasn't really sucked me back in.

Maybe just need to spend a bit more time back on it rather than messing with mods for 40 minutes at a time.

Might be an idea to run GPU-Z in the background while you play, tick the box that allows it to keep monitoring. When the game starts stuttering, exit out and select all the output fields' drop-downs to see the "max reached". Could be your GPU is running out of VRAM, in which case I'd bin the Skyrim HD 1.5 "full" for starters! The "lite" pack is much better for 1Gb GPUs and it's very difficult to see the difference. I'd also look carefully at any other HD texture packs you're running...

I love both games, to be honest. Oblivion was the first RPG I really sunk my teeth into (on the 360 first time round), clocked up loads of hours and then switched over to Fallout 3. Then went back to Oblivion on the PC and pretty much doubled the previous effort!

I do think Skyrim is fantastic, though. It's not a game I've played non-stop since I bought it, but I always look forward to picking it up again. My questing pattern is completely stupid though, I'm pretty much wandering the map finding the nearest arrow, which means I'm hopping around doing a bit of this, a bit of that, and sometimes it's hard to remember exactly why I'm killing all these witches/trollls/forsworn/etc (!).

Got this for PC (previous console skyrim veteran), started it up and the game promptly glitched during the intro. The lead cart was being flung around the screen, smashing into my cart, tipping it over (though none of us fell out). Finally our cart came to rest against the wall but no one got out, I had to restart. Funny as fook.

Also, in the first town there was a chicken hovering 60 feet in the air. As I approached it plummeted straight down and splatted on the ground with a sqwuak. Even funnier.
