new 7950 not detected

Brought a new 7950 for my gaming rig.

Took out my 560 after uninstalling all the drivers.

Plugged in the new GFX card, put all the power cables in.

Tun it back on.

Card spins up and carrys on spinning but red VGA led appears on board.

Have tried new bios, changing pci port, changing port that the monitor is plugged into.

The computer works with my 560 still but not with the new 7950.

Don't know what else to try.

Help!!

I'm not the most pc savvy but it sounds like you've tried most of the things I would have already.

Clutching at straws, but until one of the resident gurus comes along to suggest something better, a couple of things you could always try:

- check that you can still post with the 560 back in your pc (to rule out the motherboard)

- try taking out your RAM and sticking it back in or using alternate slots....or possibly even running with a single stick (oddly enough I've heard of one person who claimed they got a red vga led due to their RAM not being seated properly)

- try a different video cable and if possible a different video out on the card (e.g. dvi rather than hdmi) to rule out a problem with a particular port

I'm not 100% sure when the led is meant to come on though so some of the above suggestions may not be particularly valid

Good luck!

Personally, if I was putting a new gpu in I'd reformat Windows on the PC.

Only thing you haven't tried is the card in another PC. Other than that I can't see anything you haven't done.

Does the 7950 need another power connector or use an 8pin connector?

That's what I thought with my 6870, Scan & XFX say otherwise & charged me £40 for the privelege. I really need to try re-installing it.
@ O/P; where did you buy it fom & how long you had it?

I would RMA it for a refund personally. Under Distance Selling Regulations you can return online purchases within 7 days of receipt for any reason, so it shouldn't matter if the card is working or not.

If you have any concerns though then you might want to send a PM to 5UB who is a member here. He works for Overclockers UK and has helped a few members out when they've had issues. I'm sure he'd be happy to confirm what your options are

Agree with jellofund; return it under DSR while you can.
