Pretty amazing for a free game this, well worth a try. Had a couple of hours trying to build up my stats yesterday but Jesus it's hard. I managed to get the hang of things pretty quick being an avid player of Tribes2 back in the day but I was lucky to get 4-5 kills per match. I tried CTF but got my ass well and truly handed to me, not one kill, obviously where the hardcore bunch hang out.

I really recommend giving it a bash, it's free after all.

I'm a pretty low level and haven't upgraded much. I'm sure you can increase speeds etc with upgrades.

I've been playing this loads and it's the first F2P game I have ever spent money on, mostly for the 50% increase in xp you gain as a VIP member really liking it.

Just picked up the freebie version on steam as wasn't sure how much I'll play it. Went to run it and it wants to install something but doesn't say what, not keen on random installing of software if I don't know what it was.

Also as it hi-rez who make this will that use the same account as the global agenda one from steam?

i played this game when it came out and didnt really enjoy it too much. wish there was an ingame voice chat or something since none of friends like this game...

Is it of a quite grand scale like Planetside 2?

No nothing like PS2. It's a dead hard game to get into it.

330 or so hours later, this game is great, though I picked up the Steam starter pack in the summer sale when it was £3.74 as all my other gold was purchased through the Hi-Rez store. Since I've hit the old UK new console game price of £45 without buying any other PC game the past nine months I'm getting everything else with XP, but VIP and one boost was a great help.

The Raider Class unlock discount ends at some time tomorrow afternoon on Steam (whenever 10AM PDT is in America), that's £5.99 and basically just under half the price that it cost to buy 1400 gold and buy the same pack for 1282. When it goes back up to £11.99, it'll be the same price as if you bought it through Paypal at the Hi-Rez site give or take £1 for the exchange rate.

So if all the old deals are coming back through Steam and indirectly Valve takes a cut, not just Hi-Rez, I can live with that. I've hit my personal limit on spending in the game, and would leave every other F2P game as free. It's still great that new players since the Steam launch have three choices for how they acquire weapons.

I know I'm late to this but I had a go tonight and thought it was brilliant. I played as a technician as I thought it would fit my playstyle and it does. I hung back around the base repairing the generator and turrets. Got into some good tussles down in the generator room.

Bit of a learning curve, no map that I could find, took me a while to figure out where the generator was.

I can see me playing this a fair bit!

Another 70hrs later Hi Rez put out a GOTY edition for Tribes Ascend, where you pay the one price and everything's unlocked including the new Shocklance close combat weapon - you just earn the XP to master the items.

The catch is, as of Valentine's Day there's no more VIP status for new buyers, although everyone who ever bought gold via Paypal or the Steam Starter pack gets to keep it. From HR's point of view I'm assuming this is the drive to get people to buy Gold to get XP boosters. However everything is now half-price to master every weapon and perk (between 7500 and IIRC, up to 12000) so the grind has been reduced by 50%.

There's also 1 brand new CTF map and 2 remakes inc the return of Bella Omega, and three new Arena maps, which you don't need to buy the GOTY to play. Still enjoying it but life's busy and I'm lucky to get on twice a week to play it.

Best of all, the EU London server has returned so you now have the choice of gaming domestically or against continental European players, I've found AMS52 and AMS54 to be excellent trainers against the hardcore.
