Thanks bud for the quick and helpful reply, I didn't think I'd be interested in 3d gaming until I tried it on my ps3, now is it better to go for a very capable card like a 7950 or would the 7870 or the equivalent nividia offering do?

tbh bud Im not really familiar with the AMD equivilants as Ive only looked at nvidia- but you can game in 3d on a GTX460 (like me- although ok I have two now) and above whch really is as entry as you can get in gaming cards so its not a demanding task- perticularly as you can only game in 3d at 720p @60hz or 1080p @24hz.

The 3d experience isnt really effected by the card per say (ie the 3D experience itself will be no different between a gtx460 and a gtx680)- its the objects and gameplay/framerates that are naturally improved by them

In theory yes- although tbh I do at 1080p @24hz and have no problems and the game plays beautifully smooth- but ive never noticed the effects people say about gaming at 24hz so that could just be me- but yes in theory it is far better to game at 720p @60hz

From what i've read on Tom's you can game @60hz if you use the display port. Nvidia 3D Vision Vs. AMD HD3D: 18 Games, Evaluated : The State Of 3D Gaming

I've just realised you are prob using tv's so you have to stick to hdmi.

Hopefully you guys can help!!

I have a Hanns G HS233H3B 3D 120Hz monitor, I'm receiving my Gigabyte 7970 OC today. I would like to give 3D gaming a go!! But have no idea what else I need.

I have done research on my monitor and it is on nVidia's 3D Vision list and I know it uses Active Shutter glasses. But what I don't know is how I do 3D with ATi and this monitor.

Please help as OCN guys don't seem to care and have not left a single answer to my thread over there.

Does that monitor come with glasses?

I found this guide which will probably point you in the right direction: http://www.amd.com/us/Documents/AMD_...etup_Guide.pdf

I am with Nvidia so not much help to you. Very easy with team green.... buy a 3d monitor and a 3d vision kit (glasses and a sync unit) and away you go - or if you have a 3d TV with glasses already, you can buy Nvdida 3D TV play and use that.... what AMD do and how they do it, I don't know... perhaps something similar?

Do let us know once you work it out please!

No it didn't but the details say it requires Active Shutter glasses for the 3D. But I can't find any info about ATi and active shutter glasses, infact I can't find any info about the type of glasses you can use for ATi 3D.

Not read any of the thread, but I'm considering getting a 120hz monitor for my birthday. Do I need the Nvidia 3D Vision kit or do monitors that come with the glasses work as well? And what do people recommend as a good 24" monitor?

If you have an Nvidia card you'd be better off with looking at a 3d Vision ready monitor.

With the Samsung monitor I have you can use the bundled Tridef software to get 3D but it works much better with AMD cards. Nvidia cards are limited to running in side-by-side mode (which is pretty horrid and reduces the resolution) and is much less impressive than running an AMD card in frame sequential or HD3D.

The 24" monitor of choice for Nvidia cards is the BenQ XL2420T but it is fairly expensive (£260-£280 ish). It does however use the newer 3D Vision2 technology which is meant to be much better than the older version, although the kit isn't bundled with the monitor so factor in approx. £85 (from Amazon who are far cheaper than anybody else I've seen).

Not sure I'd fancy stumping up £350 or so just to do some 3D gaming :/

It's a lot of cash and after trying it you may find you don't particularly like it. Whilst technologically quite impressive I bought mine for the 120Hz refresh rate and very rarely play in 3D.

I'm sure there'll be cheaper 3D Vision monitors / bundles out there but can't really recommend any. 23" seems to be the most common screen size though.

True! However been reading about it and it sounds good.

For 3d how are you supposed to lock in a 120fps rate though? What happens if it drops below that?

I've not dabbled with the 3d side of things much but with many games enabling v-sync will result in a framerate of 120. Some cap at 60 with v-sync though so the best way round that is to disable it and use something like Rivatuner (Afterburner) or EVGA Precision X to set the limit you want....I tend to use 117 as using 120 without v-sync seems to introduce a bit of screen tearing.

My understanding is that if you have a framerate of 120fps in with 3D enabled you will get 60fps per eye. If if drops below 120fps then you'll get effectively get 1/2 of whatever the fps is......I could be wrong though and I'm sure someone more clued up than me will be able to give a more definitive answer.

The benq does look very good. To buy the monitor and 3d kit is pricey though. Seems the range of monitors with lightboost is very thin on the ground at the moment too so choice is limited. Very, very tempted though. My main criticism of 3d is dull images and lightboost seems to fix that.
