CODMW2 (PC) Problem

Hello. Sorry if this is in the wrong section but I have a problem with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 on the computer and I am wondering if someone can help me.

The graphics card is a XFX HD 4890 and a Asus motherboard running Windows XP and 2 gig ram.

At random times (on both singleplayer and multiplayer) the screen goes blank with stripes and the computer freezes and needs a reboot.

I have tried it with lower resolutions but the same thing happens, but if it is very low resolution I may be able to get away with it, but that isn't really the point because it should work correctly.

Thank you.

Re: CODMW2 (PC) Problem

sounds like your graphics card is overheating

is it doing it with other games?

Re: CODMW2 (PC) Problem

Me and my father tried Crysis on full resolution and pretty high details and it seemed fine, so I guess it's not the graphics card over-heating, but it could be though, I'm not sure.

Re: CODMW2 (PC) Problem

Always try the obvious first - update your video drivers.

Re: CODMW2 (PC) Problem

Video drivers up to date, sound is also up to date, but my father might of sorted the problem out by under-clocking the graphics card and taking part of the computer case off. Touch wood. So insomniak123 might be right, maybe it WAS the graphics card.

EDIT: I am pretty sure that it was the graphics card over-heating. Thank you guys for your help and I will tell you if I experience more problems regarding this.

Re: CODMW2 (PC) Problem

bit odd that it would overheat, I've just noticed that it's a 4890 so I'm guessing it's fairly new

you might also want to consider that your PSU might not have enough juice to power your graphics card. do you know what wattage your power supply is?

Re: CODMW2 (PC) Problem

Yes, it is a new card. Also, my father noticed that the fan speed wasn't maxing out. The power supply is a corsair 620 watts, but underclocking the card seemed to of sorted it out.

Again, thanks for your help!

Re: CODMW2 (PC) Problem

I have a 9800GT and I've been experiencing some problems. Now and again the screen will freeze and/or the screen will go shades of green over certain parts of the image. Sometimes I can recover with Ctrl-Alt-Del and then cancel the box that comes up.
Haven't got to the bottom of it yet.

Re: CODMW2 (PC) Problem

I don't know what to suggest. Try googling your problem and check that your graphics card isn't over-heating, good luck.

Re: CODMW2 (PC) Problem

I've reset the resolution to the native res of my monitor (2048 x 1152) and it's actually running without problems now! That's counter intuitive to me, I'd backed off the res thinking I was asking too much of my PC and card!

Well, that's weird, but I am glad you have sorted the problem out.

Was the card overclocked in the first place?

I have had this problem in the past with some titles but if I just run stop the overclocking it seems to sort the problem out.

PS
What monitor have you got which has such an exotic native resolution?

.
Rather than underclocking did you not try to increase the fan speed in ati catalyst?

Enable ati overdrive, then enable manual fan control, and set the fan to about 60%

Might be worth downloading RivaTuner, a great little app for controlling fan speeds on your graphics card. Also try downloading some temperature software that will tell you the temps your graphics card is running at.

I had a similar problem when I got my GTX 295 but after monitoring temps I learnt a hell of a lot about my hardware & set up some fan profiles in RivaTuner so the fan speeds increase/decrease depending on temps. Now she runs like a dream

Good luck
