Lightbulb Get your overclocks out for the lads!!!! (The Return)

I'm addicted to overclocking recently so thought I'd get a thread up to see what people squeeze out of their pcs for gaming

Nice one, dam that's low voltage you've got there for 4.0ghz I can get mine to 4.0ghz but the jump up in volts needed is mad.

Yeah CPU-z doesn't display voltages right on the Xeons (or didn't when I took that). It needed like 1.325v or something for 4GHz.

Currently I have a Q6600 sitting at 3.6GHz for daily use, 1.345v. Need to get it back under water to get my nice temps @4GHz

I think my next thing is going to be to try watercooling.

Silence and lower temps, what's not to love

Pfft wuss

Never had an issue with any of my water loops, all you need to make sure is that you pay attention and leak test properly.

That is very good mate, I might give that a go. What bclk did you use?

I just stuck it on 4.0ghz and left it there. My load temps with hyperthreading on are 58-62c so I still have plenty of headroom.

re: Get your overclocks out for the lads!!!! (The Return)

My Q6600 under is water. It's a original G0 stepping and needs silly volts to sit at 3.51ghz daily (1.525v). Vid is a silly 1.325v.

Managed to get into windows at 3.9ghz but needed 1.68v!!!!

My DFI board is capable of 480FSB (tested with a E8400) but just stuck with the Q6600. Wish i had more time to get back into overclocking again as it was always good fun!!

Cant see the point. Buy a decent new PC, it plays all the games acceptably with no messing around, and reliably. When it doesnt any more, I doubt overclocking will make enough of a difference to be worthwhile. Sell it and move on.

Overclocking has always seemed really nerdy to me.

You overclock it when you get it, not when the pc is old and dated.

By overclocking you're getting extra performance for free.

E.g buy a 3.0ghz quad core and overclock it to 4.0ghz.

And yeah pcs are nerdy for gaming anyway, so overclcoking isn't any nerdier.

re: Get your overclocks out for the lads!!!! (The Return)

That's like saying: "oh I don't see the point in this free engine upgrade on my 2.0 ltr car to a 2.5 ltr without any negatives".

Overclocking done correctly gives you zero issues and gives you a CPU faster than a CPU worth 4/5x what you paid for it.

Nerdy? Possibly, but it only usually takes me 30 mins to an hour to get a good stable OC out of most CPU's. No more nerdy than setting up an AV system properley and a lot better value.

If you're not into it, fair enough, but don't slate those that do it for gaining extra performance for essentially nothing.

If there were no negatives, they would have done it for you.

Overclocking creates extra heat, and extra strain on the affected components, FACT. I work in IT and have been building computers for years, so its not like I dont know whats involved.

Sure, you can negate or eliminate these by buying better and more expensive cooling, but then you've just spent more to start with. This generally takes more power, and creates more noise. To get around these effects, you spend more again.

So its hardly for "nothing" is it?

And the car analogy is really quite bad

Not really the same now is it?
More like, buy a brand new scooby or evo, turn up the boost to get more power without spending anything, then boom, new pistons and bottom end needed.

re: Get your overclocks out for the lads!!!! (The Return)

The main reason for overclocking a games rig is that most cpus at stock are a bottleneck for the gpu. Take a 4870X2 for example it is bottlenecked by the cpu unless the clock speed is at 3.6Ghz on a quad core 775 socket intel cpu. Anything under that clock speed and you will not be getting the most out of that card. Its a bit like buying a 4 bedroom house but you are only allowed to use 1 bedroom.

Most current gen gpus are bottlenecked by the cpu with a clock speed of under 3.0Ghz on the same 775 socket cpu.

Therefore if you want to get the most out of your gpu you will need to overclock.

As for the extra heat this isnt an issue unless you vastly push the cpu and you have poor cooling. Most of the people who are overclocking have a decent cooler and good airflow in their cases so heat isn't and issue unless they really push the cpu.

Overclocking can make a bottom end chip surpass a top end cpu for zero cost. Therefore overclocking is very popular with people who know what they are doing and want the most out of their system. Its also a free boost which is hard to say no to.

As for shortening the life of the hardware by overclocking, this is not really relevant as the hardware will be long out of date and useless before it fails.

Not at all. Well, perhaps if you did it

The idea is to buy a low-end CPU and overclock it to above the level of a high end CPU, totally 100% stable with no issues.

As I said: if you haven't OC'd properly and don't want to then fine, but don't talk what is essentially rubbish about overclocking until you've tried it properly!

Because avforums is the home of off topic threads.

But a good point, as I wasn't asking for the pros and cons of overclocking.

If someone doesn't see the point that's up to them.

i don't see the point of fishing or trainspotting but I won't go on to their thread and try taking the pee.
