The Witcher

Just wanted to post a short note to say that anyone with any interest in single player RPG should get this.

I had not heard of this until 2 days ago when the name popped up as a recommendation for a good RPG.

I played this for a few hours last night and absolutely love it.

I was a big fan of oblivion and played that to death on the xbox.

However this is even better. The graphics on full settings are great - so much better than oblivion. The story is very adult orientated and moves the game along at a fare old pace. the combat at first was very odd but i am now loving the combat.

Its a different experience to oblivion which is more of an open ended game. The witcher is more on rails (well the parts i have played are anyway). You follow a plot line which progresses the story along. The good thing about it is that you get choices as to what to do. Its a bit like those fantasy novels whee you are given a choice and then you turn to that page to see where the choice takes you.

There are side quests as well but the main focus seems to be the story which is again different to oblivion where the fun of that game was the side quests.

Re: The Witcher

I've never played The Witcher but have heard quite a lot of mixed opinions about it - some good, and some bad.

I think I'm going to pick it up and try it out. I watched that video presenting an Alpha version of The Witcher 2 and I thought it looks amazing. Very atmospheric, especially the day/night cycle that begins at 1:47 on that video. Amazing.

Thanks for reminding me of this game, sunshinewelly.

Re: The Witcher

I played through the first sort of tutorial bit, then for some reason or other, I couldn't play for a few weeks, went back to it, got to the first village bit, couldn't work out what as I was supposed to do and couldn't really be bothered to go through the tutorial again and that's where I left it.

Still sat on my harddrive a year later, never having got around to going back to it.

Unfortunately it's a game that takes a little while to get going and yes, I was a bit lost at first. I did enjoy the game though. A little dated now but it's well worth it. The Witcher 2 could also be good but as of yet it's still a long way off.

If you do go back to it make sure you upgrade to the enhanced version. Its free to people who already own the original version and makes a big difference to the game.

Re: The Witcher

Just started the enhanced version. The combat is a bit strange though. All I seem to be doing is clicking on the opponents continously and moving out the way when they strike using pause to change style of strikes. I'm sure there's more to it though???

Witcher 2 looks good but havent even started the first one yet! Probably will not have the chance before dragon age comes out - so many excellent games so little time

It was the enhanced version I got anyway, so I may go back for another look.

Anyone want to give me a clue as to what I should be doing? I'm in the village, been in the pub and talked to some people, it's night time and I don't think they'll open the gates to the village until morning, so I can't go anywhere.

it takes a while to adapt to the combat thats for sure but i am really enjoying it now.

you press the mouse button and then press it again in sequence (when you see the flaming sword) and then again etc to build up combos. dont randomly press it as you get nowhere

i have not got that far yet but it sounds like you should rest until morning (you can sleep for varying periods of time) when the gates will then be open etc

As Sunshine said, have a kip until morning. You can also waste some time with some fistfights at the Inn.

Now that rings a bell

I remember when I went back to playing there was a way to go to sleep, but I couldn't remember how to do it. I had quick scan through the manual, but couldn't find an obvious answer.

I think what I'll do is start again, right at the beginning, tutorial et al, and continue playing while the info is still fresh in my mind.

Just a heads up to say that The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director's Cut is 50% off (£11.49) on Steam at the moment. I've just bought it!

Seem to remember you have to sit around a fire to sleep.

Not tried the texture pack, but it looks pretty good as it is. Which texture pack are you looking at?
