Seeking a solid RPG - any suggestions?

I enjoyed Oblivion, but not so much Fallout 3.

I'm now looking for a solid RPG to play offline on the PC. Doesn't have to be a new game, just want something with substance along similar lines to Oblivion. Any suggestions?

Re: Seeking a solid RPG - any suggestions?

The Witcher is very highly rated. Failing that, and probably a little too obvious, have you thought about Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind? There is also Two Worlds although that is held in much less esteem.

How about the original Neverwinter Nights and expansions?

Since you did say doesn't have to be new... ;-)

Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect are also other RPGs worth looking at.

Gothic 1 and 2 are great and can be had for very little money from good old games. You might also want to give Risen a try.

I second Morrowind. Not as good looking as oblivion but i think it was a better all round game.

Yep I enjoyed Morrowind as well.

Also have a look at Dungeon Siege. I think there were 2. You should be able to get them cheap and great fun

Re: Seeking a solid RPG - any suggestions?

Anyone else think it's pretty sad that the only real recommendations for a good RPG are all at least over 5 years old?

(with the exception of Risen of course)

What's happened to the good old trusty PC RPG these days? Everyone's more interested in the MMORPGs now?

On that note, I'd like to recommend Ultima Underworld

There is a couple of really big ones due in the next few weeks, Dragon Age from Bioware () which is hopefully a spiritual successor to Balders gate, and Borderlands. Since last year we got the awesome fallout 3 and mass effect last year I don't think things are too bad in the rpg space.

The Witcher and Mass Effect aren't five years old! Plus the OP has played two of the AAA RPGs of recent years - Oblivion and Fallout 3 - so I don't think we can say we are too badly off when it comes to RPGs.

Re: Seeking a solid RPG - any suggestions?

Yeah I would keep an eye on Dragon Age about to be released.

However, the older games can be just as fun

I would even recommend trying out Wizardry 8, the graphics are a bit bad now, but it was good old fashioned hack and slash dungeoning

Re: Seeking a solid RPG - any suggestions?

Sorry I meant traditional RPG with dragons and orcs etc.

Dragon Age: Origins looks great... I hope it's a traditional type RPG version of Mass Effect... that would be special. Got my pre-order in for that.

I quite enjoyed Dark Messiah Of Might & Magic too. That's cheap on Steam now.

Another vote for Witcher. One of the best RPGs ever let alone in the last few years. The enhanced edition truly polishes it into a great game.

Definitely check it out.

Re: Seeking a solid RPG - any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions. on the Witcher though, from the reviews I wasn't sure if it was a true RPG because your character is already set in stone. Normally RPGs allow you to define who you are and what your role is. But it does look interesting

Re: Seeking a solid RPG - any suggestions?

Early reviews for Dragon Age are starting to leak out and they're looking almost overwhelmingly positive. John Walker from PC Gamer UK and rockpapershotgun.com says
Quote:
A truly astonishing game. Vast, vivid and microscopically detailed. Dragon Age is the RPG of the decade.
If you just can't wait 2 weeks for Dragon Age, then I would suggest checking out The Witcher.

That looks awesome so far!

I completed all the Ultima games as they were released (well my Dad did the first couple as I was too young back then). Ultima VI is a complete classic of a game.

Glad to hear positive things about Dragon Age: Origins too.

Yes the remake of Ultima VI is looking good - bought a copy of dungeon siege ready for it. The first rpg I played was ultima underworld 2 - what a great game that was - from then on I was hooked and had to play all the ultimas. I think I am quite unusual in liking ultima VIII and IX - I think they both could have been a lot better but I still enjoyed them. It was a real shame the series had to end there though.

Re: Seeking a solid RPG - any suggestions?

I used to love it the day the a new Ultima game would come out. You'd get this massive box full of disks, a huge cloth map of Britannia, some trinket linked to the game, and the game itself was massive. Would take months of solid play to finish.

I still remember installing and it would say "please insert disk 39 of 47"

The Ultima Worlds games were brilliant too like The Savage Empire set in a world of dinosaurs and the amazing Martian Dreams.

They don't do story lines like those games anymore

Re: Seeking a solid RPG - any suggestions?

I am also a big RPG fan and had never heard of the witcher until i read this thread.

the game looks great and i have just picked up the enhanced pack from priceminister for under £11 new delivered. there is a £5 code doing the rounds as the game is out of stock everywhere it seems.

cant wait for this to arrive now.

i am currently playing titans quest (expansion pack) - picked it up from direct2drive last saturday for just over £3 and its a great little game - worth playing especially if you like greek legends c. ie spartans, greek gods etc

its like being in a Ray Harryhusen movie - its fantastic - its even got the golden fleece in it

Yes I remember having a pile of disks to install - I played both Parts 1 and 2 of ultima 7 when they first came out on my ninja 486 DX266 with 4 MB Ram, 200 MB hard disk and 1 MB on Graphics card (eat your heart out Razor ) -I sold my car to buy this PC - cost over £2000. I thought ultima 7 (both parts) was a great game and was a forerunner to oblivion etc which never recaptured the magic of the ultima games - they are sadly missed

By the way I have remembered another game that is worth trying - eschalon book 1 - the next episode book 2 is due soon - this Indie game is certainly worth playing.

Just thought of another couple of oldies but goodies - might & magic VI and VII - the first of these can be bought from gog.com very cheaply (as a set of M&M 1-6). I spent a lot of hours being entertained by these games.
