Re: Aliens vs. Predator

Looks pretty good. The new DX11 models are really going to highlight the difference between the PC version and the console versions.

Re: Aliens vs. Predator

Oh dear, seems to be coming a common theme this lack of dedicated servers. Nothing is set in stone but doesn't look good at all!!!!

Quote:-

Modern Warfare 2, of course, done stepped in it with the dedicated-server thing. CVG talked with a producer and got less-than-assuring answers that Alien vs. Predator PC will support dedicated boxes, too.

In an interview with the Rebellion senior producer David Brickley, CVG pointedly mentioned that "There's been a lot of controversy this month surrounding Modern Warfare 2 and its ditching of PC dedicated server," and "Historically AvP is obviously a big PC game. How are you making sure you support the PC version and keep your community happy?

Replied Brickley:

This is a title that we want to support for a long time to come. If it's not been announced yet then certainly the PC version will benefit from Direct X 11 features. That's one thing we can use to make sure that people who invest in the hardware will get the absolute best.

Uhm, yes, but the question was about dedicated servers, right? CVG pressed on with:

And it was originally a PC title so you can imagine the heritage and the need within Rebellion itself to make sure that people who still play and talk of that game are not left behind.
And are you guys going to have those dedicated servers the community so clearly expects?

Replied Brickley:

Well the one thing we can say is obviously running an operation like that is monumentally expensive. For the period the original was up, people who played that game got an incredible experience.

You know what the internet's like. We're obviously used to getting things for free over the years. I guess on our side the thing we're focusing on is whatever your set-up at home, you get the best possible experience from it. We're just trying to use our time and resources wisely.

We think we've got our answer here, but just to get it for the record, CVG asks:

CVG: So is that a yes or a no on the dedicated servers?

Brickley: As I said the game is still quite a way from release so I guess there are other things to be determined during that time.

Given three opportunities to talk about it, we'll take that as a "no."

I don't think we should get too concerned. First and foremost we don't know for certain that AvP3 does not support dedicated servers - he didn't comment but companies can be quite strange about what they are allowed to talk about in advance.

More importantly however the major FPS game engines - Unreal and Source - do support dedicated servers and with all-time popular games such as Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead using them it is not a trend that is going away. This said the business model may change for games that use dedicated servers - perhaps our future online games will be subscription based? I can see us maybe paying £10 per month for Team Fortress 3 but new maps and weapons every month! Interestingly, depending on the success of AvP3, an Aliens based online game is being considered...

The thing is that from a game developers point of view dedicated servers are pretty much free for FPS games.

Nearly all dedicated servers are provided by the hosting companies and by clans.

I guess they just don't want to bother with the support of updating and patching server clients.

Yes I think you are right - having a P2P system effectively means they just have the one software package to support. However those that seek their games to be 'big' MP games - and don't under estimate the number of extra sales that can mean - I think fully appreicate the benefits of dedicated servers, i.e. clans, modding etc.

I think - and time will tell on this one - part of the reason for dropping dedicated servers on Modern Warfare 2 was to clear the ground for an upcoming Call of Duty MMO that will use dedicated servers on all platforms.

The European release date for Aliens vs Predator 3 has been set as February 19, 2010 for all platforms.

Apparently it will be released in three editions - Normal, Survivor and Hunter - although there is no clarrification if this includes the PC verison. The Survival pack will be in a steel case and include a code for downloading additional MP maps. The Hunter addition will also have the code but, in addition, will include a facehugger model, a 3D lenticular postcard and a Weyland Yutani sleeve badge.

I remember playing the first one and the atmosphere was great, the girlfriend wouldn't try to play it in the dark. The second one had that same feeling to it.

Hoping this one keeps that going in terms of your nerves on edge.

My only concern will be I'll probably not be using a DX11 card so hopefully it'll still be good in the looks department.

MP could be interesting and it really needs the servers to make it a success. It'll be interesting to see how they balance the teams in the games, uneven sides in 3 way fight could be challenging.
