As the other thread has gone over the 1000 post limit I thought I would start part 2 of Dx11 Games & Hardware.

the Dual core is inside the Soap, the Pins stick out at the Back , you could really call the Soap on a Rope Dual Action , but Jim always Sorts it out

As long as Jim can fix it for Nvidia to hurry up and release their next gen cards I will be happy.

Thats because the game hasn't been released yet.

Also you dont need win7 for Dx11. It works on vista but not on xp.

Re: Dx11 Games & Hardware (part 2)

If you buy the Sapphire 5870 from Overclockers it says it includes Dirt 2, Disc or Code u think then ?

So when am i likely to struggle with games with my 4870 and require an upgrade? Will most likely wait till end of nxt year before even thinking about it if possible.
Would mean ruining tidy build and changing my PSU tho

Re: Dx11 Games & Hardware (part 2)

Dirt 2 is via a download from a supplied code when it is releases. I think the download is from steam.

Dirt 2 is out in December on the pc.

BTW what psu have you got? A good 500watt should be fine for a 5870.

Re: Dx11 Games & Hardware (part 2)

Nice one good to know, simple 2 minute job.
When they get cheaper may just get one anyway mid 2010, not like i may require one at my 1360x768 but if the od DX11 game starts to struggle will fire one in, nice to have in anyway.

If you game at 1366x768 then go for the 5850 a 5870 will be wasted at that res.

Go for the display upgrade first. Then get a new card unless you are desperate for DX11.

ahh ok. just that every pic ive seen has dirt 2 plastered over the box, i assumed it came free with the card.

So with the max reported wattage under load being around 190w what would a good psu be to handle 2 iin cf?

Re: Dx11 Games & Hardware (part 2)

I would say around 700watt. I run a 4870x2 on a 620watt corsair along with i7 @ 4.0Ghz and watercooling and its fine. However 2 x 5870's needs slightly more power than 4870X2. If the 5870X2 is anything like the 4870X2 it will use less power than two separate cards and you might be able to get away with a 620-650 watt psu.

Re: Dx11 Games & Hardware (part 2)

To backup what Razor is saying;

700 watt looks like an absolute minimum for 5870 crossfire.

Considering that one 5870 is on a par with a 4870X2 performance wise, if the 5870X2 does use less juice than 5870 crossfire then that would be close to double performance for very little extra power usage.

anandtech says not this year (at least not in reasonable numbers) and I trust them far more than I trust faudzilla who have become unrealiable nvidea fanboys in the same way that semi accurate is for ati.

Quote:
The price is a valid concern. Fermi is a 40nm GPU just like RV870 but it has a 40% higher transistor count. Both are built at TSMC, so you can expect that Fermi will cost NVIDIA more to make than ATI's Radeon HD 5870.

Then timing is just as valid, because while Fermi currently exists on paper, it's not a product yet. Fermi is late. Clock speeds, configurations and price points have yet to be finalized. NVIDIA just recently got working chips back and it's going to be at least two months before I see the first samples. Widespread availability won't be until at least Q1 2010.

So that means people like anand getting samples at the beginning of December so realistically we arn't going to be getting them before Christmas certainly not in a new computer anyway. This decides it for me not to wait. Would be a shame not to have the new pc to enjoy the christmas flood of games with.

It was meant to come with the card but they didn't manage to finish the game on time, so you still get the free copy but have to wait for it.

I think it's likely to be March next year by the time all the options are out and we have a good idea what the best upgrade is.

Re: Dx11 Games & Hardware (part 2)

That's not good is it? ATI will have sold by the bucketload by that time and will most likely be releasing their midrange cards (56**?) series. So regardless of how strongly nVidia jump in at the high end, ATI will be ready to lower their top end prices to p155 them off and be ready to clean up in the budget/midrange segment with new cards.

D'oh.

Yeah, spot on nam. That's why I was saying 700w as an absolute minimum for that 5870 crossfire set up. I'm only running a 650w but it's running at around 50% load. If I went dual gpu, I'd definitely upgrade it.

The other thing worth checking is what the psu can supply on it's dedicated 12v rail that supplies the gpu.

Yeah I read that last night on ocuk. To be honest I think I will wait till I get my next card mate. I also need a more powerful psu if I was to do that.
