To be honest its pretty much as expected and its not far off a crossfire or SLI setup.

260gtx = 2x8800gt
280gtx = 2x8800gtx

I just wish these cards would just hurry up an get released. I also hope that Nvidia bring their range out very soon after ATI's offerings.

very keen to be upgrading myself - going to have to do some serious withholding until Nvidia cards are out to see what the lie of the land is then. DX11 and SSD for me over next couple of months.

I dont really need a new card as my 4870X2 plays everything on full, but I cant resist a shiny new gpu to play with. Out of all the bits of hardware needed to make a pc a graphics card release always excites me the most.

I think I will be going with Nvidia this time around if the top end cards are equal, mainly for physx. I also hope they bring out the waterblocks very quickly for these new DX11 cards.

Sums you up mate! I'm considering getting myself a new card when they come out. Think one would go nicely with my system. Am I right in thinking that even though they will be more powerful, having them on a 40nm chip should make them have less heat?

Re: Dx11 Games & Hardware

Heat will be the same mate as they will clock the hell out of it which is where they get the extra power/speed from.

In fact temps are always around the same level. You wont suddenly see a gpu @ 30c @ load because its on a smaller die.

You will only see cooler running gpus on the bottom end non gaming cards when there is a die shrink.

Re: Dx11 Games & Hardware

Fair enough. I was just worried about the overall impact on the heat of the machine. Shouldn't be a problem though. Hopefully I can afford a new card when they come out.

Dont worry about heat mate, you will be fine.

You will probably need to overclock your cpu more not to bottle neck the card. I can see this being the next thing people will be mentioning once the card is released.

If a 5870 is on par with a 4870X2 a clock speed of at least 3.6Ghz will be needed on a quad core 775 socket 65nm cpu.

You think as high as that? In that case I'm not sure it's worth me getting one. In the summer at hot times my temps already idle at around 40-43 (although this does go down to under 30 when it's cooler) and I am only on 3.0Ghz. Taking it any higher would make it too hot in which case I would have to get a newer cpu which runs cooler. If I got a new cpu and gpu then I may as well get a whole new machine.

Re: Dx11 Games & Hardware

Wait and see mate. You should be able to overclock your cpu more. You can always run the card bottlenecked but you wont be getting the full potential from the gpu if the cpu isnt fast enough.

so what benefit would someone who already has 4870 x2 have when purchasing these new cards if it performs the same? epic failure

Yeah exactly, but at least it will be running as fast as currently is possible with any games then.

I'm going to wait for the DX11 dual GPU cards to come out rather than get one of the first single GPU cards.

1) Uses less power
2) One GPU = less heat and less noise than 2 GPUs in X2
3) DX11

so for £300/£400 more the benefits are more to do with your GPU running more efficiant and not giving you extra FPS in your games

quality. i guess this wont make arma 2 or crysis run any better then yay

waste of time. wake me up when theirs a card that shows performance increase in games and not just an eco friendly card

I think you've got your facts a bit twisted here. If you run two of these in Crossfire, then you are getting a huge increase in performance on whatever is available now.

One card will run much faster than all other ATI cards, except the 4870 X2... but it will be quieter/cooler... and you can always add another later.

You will also have DX11 support, which looks like it's going to be pretty awesome for games.

The only people it won't be a huge upgrade for is owners of 4870 X2 cards... which isn't a lot of people. Those people will probably be able to sell their X2 cards for about £200 or so... which means paying £99 or so for the new card (which is what I think Razor is aiming for).

Razor does not sell his cards - he keeps them and hangs them on his Christmas tree.

You seem to be forgetting that there will be an x2 version of the new cards too (though perhaps a month or so later).

So if a 5870 = a 4870x2 then a 5870x2 will kick ass.

Re: Dx11 Games & Hardware

The power of a 4870x2 on a single card is good IMO. Having one of these cards I know just how good they are. Plus we dont know how well these will overclock as well. Id say having the power of the 4870x2 as a base card is good for all. It will be interesting to see Nvidia offering as well. Also, these will develop just as the last gen did. I think price will be more of a factor as to how well these will do.

Pretty much as eiren says. Also not many people have a 4870X2 so this one gpu solution would be a nice upgrade from their current card which might be a 260gtx/4870/4850/250gtx etc...

I will probably go with another dual gpu solution as I have been impressed with my 4870X2.

then i fail to see why its not better to get the cheaper 4870x2 rather then a single 5870 then.

im sure the 4870x2 will be cheaper then a 5870. imo the 5870 should be the best thing out but from what you guys have been telling me it wont be. you would need a 5870x2 to see some differences in games and all that energy efficiency crap goes out the window with that card

No offence mate but have you not been reading this thread?

The 5 series has DX11, the 4 series doesn't. Its as simple as that. The 5 series will also have an X2 card which will be allot more powerful than the 4 series X2.

If you want you can buy my 4870X2 as I will be selling mine.

Haha yeah it's a good idea to read the replies to your post before posting again, Jonney.

Also the 4870 X2 are no longer being made. Good luck finding a new one soon.

ATI Plans to Release Dual-Chip DirectX 11 Graphics Board Late in 2009 - X-bit labs

Say's December is earliest for GT300 DigiTimes: DirectX 11 Radeons due in October - The Tech Report this may replace the Fairy on top of the tree will have to see.
