October 2006 Winner - Self Portrait

This months comp has been a treasure trove of excellent photos & digital montages, the best yet.
What makes this month so different is that we have also learnt more about each other, with the members pictures reflecting how they feel in the pictures
Superb stuff.
A few members seem to be having a hard time emotionally and i thought i would take a bit of a fun photo, which might cheer them up for a bit.

We all go through tough times at some time in a life, me included.

Many years ago i went through the trauma of a divorce and i thought a shutter had come down on my life, but i began to focus on the things that made me laugh instead of negative things.
since then i make it a point to find something to laugh about every day (usually myself)

This photo was taken with the camera on a tripod and using an electronic shutter release cable, i couldnt help laughing at the absurdity of what i was doing to get this picture.

Camera - Leica Digilux 2
Shutter speed - 1/80 sec
Aperture f3.2
iso 400
Focal length - 30mm
flash on

Oh i did a small amount cropping to line up the shelf with the bottom of the picture, other than that its how it came uot of the camera.

Re: Shelf Portrait

great pic!

I, like you, try and look for something to make me smile every day!
Often that thing is me, but then a healthy dose of self mockery never did anyone no harm!
I'm coming from a different perspective (happily married, content, proud dad) but I find life and profesional work is always better if you smile - even if you dont always feel like it!!!

I think he means PhotoShop which implies that he thought you had digitally put your head on the shelf. But didn't you put your head through a hole in the shelf so what we see is really your head there?

Re: Shelf Portrait

Ugh !!!!
i dont even have photoshop, the only program i have is an 8 year old hp photo printing software disc that came with a 1mp hp camera i bought.
All it does is alter contast/brighness, colour cast, rotation and simple cropping, it does all that i want it to, oh it it has a very good photo album feature as well

i assume steve is having a joke about my views on digital montages.

as i said on my entry, the only work done on photo, was a very slight cropping below the shelf, absolutely nothing else was done, its as exactly as the camera took it.
the only other tool i used to make this photo was a bosch jigsaw.

I feel hurt by this slur on my character and at this moment i am engaging a team of top lawyers who assure me that i can expect to win substantial damages off of steve.

Be afraid Steve, be very afraid

Re: Shelf Portrait

I'm so glad Steve inadvertently drew the explanation as to what you'd done - I was puzzling away at this (in between chuckles). Really nice shot, great fun - I just hope it was an old shelf (unless liquid is willing to change his prize from a print to a shelf). It may be less authentic, but I reckon PS causes less damage to one's surroundings!

Re: Shelf Portrait

I,m beginning to think a digitally manipulated image might be less painful to produce.

The shelf i found discarded, i measured the exact diameter of my neck and cut this out from the back (i even managed to get a semi circular cut ound the front of the cut)
I then perched the shelf between 2 chairs facing outwards and then got my other half to hold the shelf away from the wall while i inserted my neck then pushed back against the wall, i was crouched at a really uncomfortable angle whilst holding the cable realease in one hand (one has to suffer for ones art)
My other half could not stop laughing at the ridiculous antics, which made me laugh as well.

Still it was worth doing for the laughs alone, when it comes to voting i will be happy if i get just one vote, even if it is only a sympathy vote.

Re: Shelf Portrait

The more I look at this photograph, the more it makes me smile. I just can't help picturing the scene. You forcing your neck down the gap, trying not to knock the camera off.. fiddling with a cable release. Your missus laughing at the obsurdity of it all...

I hope that one of your neighbours was watching through the window.

I have to admit, when I first saw it, I thought that there was at least some manipulation, around the bottom of your neck to make a seamless join with the shelf.. but now I can see that this is just the result of careful planning sprinkled with a pinch of madness.

Superb stuff.
A few members seem to be having a hard time emotionally and i thought i would take a bit of a fun photo, which might cheer them up for a bit.

Camera - Leica Digilux 2
Shutter speed - 1/80 sec
Aperture f3.2
iso 400
Focal length - 30mm

Oh i did a small amount cropping to line up the shelf with the bottom of the picture, other than that its how it came uot of the camera.
Just looking at past winners of the photo com and saw this and I must say brought the biggest smile on my face for a long time, all my pains from the weekends walk seem to be much better, excellent stuff bodoman
