July 2008 Competition - Voting Here

Well that's July over with!

Not a huge amount of entries but there never is mid summer with most on holiday so well done to those who did

On to the voting..

Thumbnail page is HERE to quickly check you haven't missed any entries (for those who bookmark the thumbnail page then you will need to re-save it as I'm using Freewebs this month till I get my head around Orange's new website format

As always a huge thank you to our sponsors for the prizes on offer HERE

The closing date for votes will be shown at the top of the poll and don't forget that all votes are public so no voting for yourself

Also if you have entered a picture then you are expected to vote, else all votes accrued by you will be disallowed

Important
The last forums update now allows guests to also vote and obviously this doesn't log a user name against the vote
For any other poll this wouldn't be an issue but as we don't allow forum members to vote for themselves in the competition then I'm having to treat the fact that guests can vote a little differently!
Therefore can I ask that if you are already a member of AVF to please log in before voting, to those who lurk on the forums and wish to vote then please feel free to register before voting, registration is free and you'll be joining an invaluable community

Any instances of guest voting will be removed, sorry

Re: July 2008 Competition - Voting Here

I like those who try something just a little different.

paulie-w's eerie quiet street - a bold entry

iandrew's urban cow - great idea

gossops through a cab window - skyscraper, NY, taxi...how more urban can you get?

In the end I'm going for iandrew's pic; it's a rare thing - an urban photo I would have on my wall.

Re: July 2008 Competition - Voting Here

Tricky one this this month, not many entries (far less than I imagined there would be), with some more urban than others, but all good efforts I tried to comment on as many entries as I could this month, but apologies as I missed a few out.

The entries that stand out for me are:

iandrews - very surreal and made me laugh.

electrolyte - great capture, with loads of different elements.

Gossops - very abstract, but it really catches the eye (plus I love the Chrysler Building !)

netronelson - defintely benefits from being viewed large.

Liquid101 - great shot, and well processed. Looks like it could be all sewn up by this one.

In the end, I picked electrolyte, as it's a clever photo - great angle, great colours - nicely done.

Re: July 2008 Competition - Voting Here

Liquid,:Polished as usual , and maybe the winner..( and why not?)
Artie fufkin , That busy urban scene kind of works

iandrews : and his cow overlooking Canary wharf
and
Kstens london eye last minute entry ..ace!
but
That Cow in the Isle of Dogs takes some beating IMHO
Reminds me of my neighbourhood somewhat
..Horse riding schools and vast green areas within the M25..

One standout entry this month, which for some reason makes me think of a Pink Floyd album cover. Well done iandrews!

Re: July 2008 Competition - Voting Here

Hmm... It was Garf all the way for me this month... the monolithic slab dominating the frame, towering over all. The B&W finish perfect for the image....

Then Liquid101 came in at the last with what seems the perfect shot, like a puzzle with all the pieces in the right place... I have to admit I thought it was staged at first too, but since you said that was just the best of a few shots you took it changed my mind. great photo.

The final vote went to Garf... I figure if he won the competition it would make a great print on the wall... and since Liquid is (justifiably) walking away with the votes right now, i'd share the love...

Well done to everyone for getting in a photo on what, I think, proved to be a more tricky subject than the theme suggests...

Cheers,

Nelson.

rizingstar gets my vote. Great strong lines, leading into a good solid B&W shot.

I noticed a lot of graffiti shots - is that the modern version of 'Urban' or is it plain old fashioned vandalism?

Re: July 2008 Competition - Voting Here

I was torn between Liquid and Rizingstar and I have to admit to being swayed by the number of votes which Liquid had already ammassed, so went for Rizingstar. Not as urban in the 'lifestyle' sense, but I thought it was a cracking shot with a lot to look at.

It has to be said that Liquid's is great too - I thought that the graffiti might have been pasted in afterwards as it inexplicably fades around the edges, but maybe I'm wrong.

I also liked Macker's in-car night shot too.

A bit annoyed with myself for not entering this month.

Been a crazy month and with very little access to the Internet it does make it that little bit more difficult.

My vote went to liquid101 well done everyone

I particularly liked electrolyte, rizingstar and Artie Fufkin.
For me though, liquid101 won hands down. An excellent photograph.

Went for Liquids superb entry, the sort of shot I really wanted to take but was worried about taking pounds worth of gear out around the streets at night.

Re: July 2008 Competition - Voting Here

Two very nice images from iandrews & ksten were my 'runners up' but neither said urban - at least in the way the word tends to be interpreted these days.
Liquid101's image clearly does, shows superb craftsmanship in every respect and gets my vote. It thoroughly deserves to win (as I'm sure it will).

Re: July 2008 Competition - Voting Here

Liquid101 - Good photo, but something just doesn't look quite right with it to me. Can't exactly put my finger on it, maybe it's the wide angle, the fact that the graffiti has faded so it looks a bit fake, or maybe it the PP that's been applied.
macker2006 - Like the idea, and it's come out well.
chrisw - Lovely view, the white contrasts the blue sea and sky, almost postcard looking.

In the end I decided to go with ksten. Urban as far as you can see, and I like the way you can see the people in the other pod pointing at things.

Ian.

Re: July 2008 Competition - Voting Here

Well, I've followed the crowd and gone with Liquid's entry. Several urban elements all brought together with a gritty feel.

Enjoyed the variations on the theme from the grafiti shots to chrisw's vibrant photograph from Santorini.

Cheers.

Re: July 2008 Competition - Voting Here

Another month goes by without an entry...

but for the first time since I started voting/entering I have had no difficulty choosing my favourite.

My vote goes to liquid. Cracking shot mate

Hopefully have an entry for next month, but with it being school hols, you can guess whats likely to be somewhere in my shot

Cheers,

Alun
