Double Top

This is my first ever go at this so hopefully I've adhered to the rules!

Double Top by chilluk, on Flickr

Taken on Canon 550d, 50mm f1.8, 1/400 sec, 430ex flash but onboard as I have no way of remote firing yet!

Uploading to Flickr seems to have made the background noisy I think at larger sizes so maybe I have done something wrong as PP is not my strong point (minute crop and resize, some adjustments)

Well captured.

What was the setup? Was the dart in flight?

Afraid not! My 12 year old offered to throw but he's not exactly Eric bristow so that was a no go.

Put board on floor and tried a straight drop. Still too random. I have done some water drops so I knew we could time it but getting a predictable landing point was impossible and focus was an issue.

So it's suspended using a single fibre from dental floss. My son loves a bit of magic so knew that was a good invisible thread.

So I had board on floor, black card behind, white to the side and bounced the flash off the card. Flash was touching the white card really.

Still needed fast shutter because at the end of the single thread the dart was dancing along with the sound waves from my sons guitar amp which was in the same room!! In fact it wouldn't stay still at all just from my movement around it.

So it's a fabricated image which I thought it would have to be but with my limited skills and kit I still like it. Was the only keeper out of about 70 shots from various angles. I had one with 3 darts in shot but the one in "flight" was a bit high in the frame.

Nice capture - you'll need double 10 with your last dart though....

Even the dental floss is no crafty cockney!

Thanks all for the comments. Glad I haven't embarrassed myself on my first go!

Lol, I originally thought you'd captured the dart in flight. Nevertheless, 10/10 for using your initiative for the setup, it doesn't take anything away from the final image

Thanks for that - I was tempted for a second to claim it was a genuine action shot I have to admit!!

Truth is even with some electronic wizardary I doubt I'd have got the shot unless I had someone who could hit the same spot time and time again.

I love this shot. It could almost be from a TV Advert.
