Liquid In Motion

Seen a few of these on Flickr, so thought I'd give it a shot myself, it's always good to try something new

IMG_3903-2.jpg by BubbleDouble, on Flickr

  • Slight straighten & crop
  • Bit of noise reduction
  • Otherwise it's OOC

Like and very nice colour........but.....slightly spoilt by the out of focus water coming out of the glass ?

I really like it - slight OOF doesn't mar it for me at all - the droplet running down the glass really makes it work for me for some absurd reason

There is a very clear focus there on the liquid still in the class, I don't mind so much that the spill is slightly oof.
This is a very nice shot I saw the other attempts in your stream and I really liked these blue ones

Thanks for the comments guys & gals

I did have a hard time with focus. As I said, it's my first time trying a shot like this. It's f/22 using my 105 macro, so DOF still not that large. Thought it better to focus on the glass, rather than try and predict where the splash would fall. In hindsight, maybe I should have used a different lens

Darren

p.s. Food colouring...£1.05 each and I bought blue, red and green. Expensive stuff!!! Have to give the green a go tomorrow.

True, it shouldn't really Never thought of that.

Question to the shooter. How did you make the liquid spill? Did you pour it in or move the glass? In that case, the focus might have gone a bit awry despite of the f point being so high. Hmm.. no, I don't know why it is either

I moved the glass along a table until it hit a stopper, at which point I released the shutter. It was the only way i could achieve the shot. I'm sure there are far more sophisticated methods, but this was all I could think of given my limited knowledge of taking such shots.

More likely it's me not knowing how to use my 430EX properly....

My question wasn't actually critique, I wouldn't get anything this good I think I was just asking out of interest.

I know Miranda

The surprising thing is that it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be....it's just very, very messy. You should give it a go...

Cheers Raj

I used my 105 macro, which meant the camera was a few feet away from the glass. The cable on my remote shutter release is quite short, so I wasn't able to move away even further and still be able to reach the glass in order to move it....my arms were pretty stretched. As I said earlier, maybe I should have used a shorter lens

I think my ramblings in this thread are simply just me over-analysing and trying to work out how I can improve the technique. This morning I found a good video on YouTube, where the guy pretty much did it the same way, except his glass was glued onto a board which was on rollers. I guess there's less chance of breaking the glass & slashing your hand open, instead of using my "hold & push the glass hard into a stopper using your bare hand" technique. It did occur to me after the shots that I could have quite easily had an accident

As above would have been nicer if the splash was fully focused, but it doesn't detract from what is a nice shot.

Anyone else looking, its worth viewing on his flickr in the light box

Very good shot, nice that you tried something new. It would have been great to me if the full glass was visible, but appreciate the challenge you had with that as posted earlier. Well done!
