Ok cheated a bit here with the bread

All the usual PP done, also cropped the foreground to clear it up

Camera: Canon EOS 450D
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1000)
Aperture: f/5.6

I quite like the idea Neil but I think a tigfhter framing on the original shot or a tighter crop and resize might have worked a little better - just too much "other stuff" in the shot for me.....


The above crop/resize suffers obviously from my enlarging from your posted image but you get the idea about the alternative composition I guess - might not work for you of course....
