Crystal Skull

Camera: Canon IXUS 950
Shutter: 10s
Aperture: f/4.2
ISO: 80
Focal Length: 14.33mm (I know. No MF, shooting glass in the dark. What can you do?)

IXUS->DNG->Canon RAW Importer->PSE
Altered temp and exp in RAW importer. Cropped, straightened, extracted the glass from its background, got rid of some noise and used the blur tool to make some parts of the image less grainy looking.

Named because the reflections at the bottom of the bowl look (a little bit) like a skull. My first entry.

I think my execution has been limited by my equipment (P&S, £10 tripod and no fancy lights) but I'd appreciate any ideas on what I could have done better.

Re: Crystal Skull

I was expecting to see Harrison Ford somewhere, but actually it's a nice image, you have done well here. Maybe just a bit tighter crop so the glass is not so overwhelmed by the dark background, and just a bit sharper on the focus, but a good effort, especially the lighting.

Keep it going. Look forward to seeing more entries from you in the following comps!

Re: Crystal Skull

This is a great idea but it hasn't really worked. The glass is way too dark and doesn't sparkle. I think the composition would benefit from some more space above the glass and more light on the glass. But I don't understand flash too well so can't offer much advice. Do a search for "ksten" as the user name for some amazing photos of glasses similar to yours. He has included how he did them too.

Re: Crystal Skull

Thanks for taking the time to reply with some useful comments. I'm going to have another crack that this kind of thing again soon and will hopefully get some better results.

Re: Crystal Skull

Actually really like this - my laptop screen may be at fault but the black could be blacker, and the crop could be closer on the sides to lose some empty space, but overall this is great, and shows that not always is a fancy SLR needed to get good shots.
