View beyond a Sea King

Took this earlier today at a local air show - picture is that of a German Sea King helicopter with my son looking through a glass port hole..

Camera Info:

Camera: Canon EOS 50D
Lens: Canon 70-200 F4 L
Exposure: 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length:
70 mm
Exposure: +0.29
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off, Did not fire

Processing:

Lightroom to darken and enhance the view through the glass window - Played around with Saturation and Color levels - Use of noise cleaner to smooth things out and added a little sharpen unmask...

Border created in CS4...

Nice. Like how you can clearly see his face, but you can also clearly see the reflection. Also, nice moody sky.

Re: View beyond a Sea King

Not what I expected to see this month, so it's great that not everyone is thinking the same way. Technically this is probably a polycarbonate window, but that's a mere detail! I thought that the lad looked a bit intense as well, I guess he was having a good time anyway. I too like the global reflections so you get an idea of context too. Nice!

Re: View beyond a Sea King

I think this may be my favourite photo of the month so far, but others maybe fit slightly better into the theme about glass.

This is going to be a very difficult month to decide where to put your vote I think.

Re: View beyond a Sea King

I wanted to capture something a little normal - A lot of people take photos of the simple ist of thing's and turn them in to great photos but forget about the natural world... I wanted to submit something that put me in a different category but at the same time keeping on subject.. I have the same shot without my son but I thought adding him would add a little colour.

I'm always taking pictures of my kids and on this occasion he was more interested in scouting around the heli than stopping for a photo but I like to keep him apart of it...

Re: View beyond a Sea King

I really like this entry, I also like the fact he isn't smiling, he looks deep in thought. The colours are good and so are the reflections of the people outside.

Re: View beyond a Sea King

Fantastic shot, bang on theme.

Love the expression on your lads face (doesn't matter that he's not smiling), like the reflection. The clouds look almost HDR rendered.

Really like this.

This is far and away my favourite photo of the month so far, but I'm not sure that it is bang on theme considering that technically there is virtually no glass in the picture at all.

Re: View beyond a Sea King

I see your point, but the crucial element in this photo is the window.

Which isn't actually made of glass, so at the moment the picture I would most like to win a theme on glass contains no glass which is what I am struggling to come to terms with.

As you keep on saying

"Glass" that's this months title right?

Does that mean all thing's glass or could that also include materials that look like glass, you tell me?
Quote:
Dictionary definition is

Any of a large class of materials with highly variable mechanical and optical properties that solidify from the molten state without crystallization!
Polycarbonate is a glass material...

Polycarbonate is very similar to that of glass but in actual fact it's not glass but made to look like glass because it's much stronger and robust hence you see it on the heli. Glasses that people wear on their head, the lenses are sometimes made of Polycarbonate but do we call them "glasses with polycarbonate lenses" or do we call them glasses "have a look at Zone's entry for 4 years ago!" are those glasses or polycarbonate lenses, maybe he should'nt have entered them?

The word "glass" categorizes so many items that's some times we dont know if it's really glass or not but it appears to be glass...

I dont want to harp on but look at it like this, last month's theme was "beautiful" so because you dont think a photo is "beautiful" does that mean it should'nt be entered...

If I cropped the above photo so you could not tell if it was a heli or not you would not have known any different...

You dont have to vote on the above photo...

If I have come across as being overly pedantic then I apologise.

I am new to the photo competition and I was just seeking clarification on how rigidly we should consider the theme when voting.

A little but it's ok - my intention with this photo was not to break the competition rules but to follow the theme wich I think I have..

Technically glass or not, it's a great shot and fully deserving of both the entry and most likely a fair few votes! This is going to be tough this month.....

Re: View beyond a Sea King

Well it was my favourite.

I go along to a photo club, with monthly competitions. I've seen and heard of the same photograph receiving a rating of 20/20 one week and then getting 12/20 another.

Everyone looks for something different in photos, just like art, and I'm not sure it's that important (or easy) to win.
