Glass Prism

I know OrbitalPete done something a little similar, but I ordered the prism especially, so decided to go with this still. A light beam passed through a glass prism at the right angle will refract and show the whole colour spectrum that white light is made of.

Camrea: Canon S5 IS
Focal length: 6mm Super Macro Mode
Shutter Speed: 1/40 sec
Aperture: F/4.5
ISO: 80

In Elements, cropped, changed levels to make it darker, also selected the “rainbow”, then inversed selection and adjusted mid tones to bring out a bit of detail. Resized, and then again selected the “rainbow”, then inversed selection and sharpened, and then on the rainbow sharpened a little less. Boarder added.

Ian.

Fantastic! So crisp and perfectly exposed, it really does the business! Hopefully you will sell the image and get the money back for the prism! This month's comp is heating up. I've a feeling there's going to be a long short list come voting time!

Wow fantastic, way better than the illustrated Pink Floyd cover!

Wow, excellent Ian. I thought of Pink Floyd as soon as I saw your title before I'd seen your image.

Re: Glass Prism

Heh! I was hoping to do something along the lines of my avatar for my first competition entry but it looks like I'll have to have another think.

Great shot.

Re: Glass Prism

nice job, I was going to do the same thing until I realised I didn't have a prism nor could I be bothered to buy one! It has turned out really well.

Re: Glass Prism

Dark Side of the Moon comes to mind. This is a very well executed and thought out photograph.

One caveat (and I hope I'm wrong) is that it appears you've flood filled the black background as it the image has background texture at all the light shaft points (except the spectrum) and the rest is plain black and has sort of nasty jagged edges to the spectrum colours @ 7 o'clock position which kinda ruins the whole finish.

It's still a well taken image, though with reservations to the pp.

No, I didn’t do a flood fill. I did alter the mid tones / levels to make it more black, and in doing so I did inverse select the rainbow so that I didn’t alter that too much, looks like this selection has left the jaggered edges. This was taken on black card, and though it seems smooth, because I was close up it seems to be showing quite a bit of texture, and I found that this also made the rainbow look grainy.

Re: Glass Prism

Excellent thinking and photography Ian, had similar thoughts myself for an entry, but i am glad you posted first as i would not have been able to produce a photograph as good as this.

Re: Glass Prism

Was waiting to see one of these. In fact I suggested something similar for my little one's science day (to be told it might be a mite complicated for a 7 year old to explain - think you would have passed that test though). Great shot, nicely done and pp'd.
